Requirements
  • A high school diploma and three years of professional experience in a related area such as accounting, auditing, finance, or commercial lending are required.
  • A bachelor's degree with multiple accounting courses may substitute for two years of the required work experience.
  • Computer literacy is required.
  • The employee must maintain confidentiality of patient information and organizational data in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • The employee must be able to perform the listed physical functions, including frequent seated, standing, walking, hand and arm use, repetitive motions, and fine motor movements; continuous indoor work and specified visual, auditory, and tactile functions; and occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and squatting up to 15 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Accurately bill Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, Medicaid, self-pay or uninsured accounts, accepted federal grant programs, and commercial dental insurance, processing claims according to payer requirements and organizational policy.
  • Audit claims and electronic health record documentation for accuracy and compliance with federal, state, and facility policies.
  • Assist member clients with filing claims for non-accepted plans in compliance with College of Dental Medicine policies.
  • Post and allocate payments, electronic remittances, and paper explanations of benefits.
  • Submit pre-treatment estimates and provide treatment plan and estimated cost reviews upon request.
  • Process fee adjustment requests according to policy and escalate requests that do not meet policy requirements to Clinical Affairs.
  • Correct claim, charge, transaction-entry, coding, payment, and electronic health record errors and audit corrections for verification.
  • Monitor accounts receivable, check claim status, resubmit overdue claims, file corrected claims or appeals, and alert the supervisor about seriously overdue accounts and trends.
  • Identify and address significantly overdue accounts according to state and facility policies.
  • Issue balance correspondence, including patient account statements.
  • Research and resolve credit balances and process refunds according to organizational and South Carolina state policies.
  • Perform deposit reconciliation for all College of Dental Medicine deposits according to separation-of-duties requirements.
  • Answer patient and responsible-party phone calls about account balances and related account matters.
  • Maintain complete and accurate billing and accounts receivable records.
  • Communicate with College of Dental Medicine faculty, residents, staff, and students according to department processes.
  • Provide regular and ad hoc reports to College of Dental Medicine leadership about missing charges, unapproved charges, and documentation; perform weekly, monthly, and yearly audits to identify trends.
  • Update insurance background information in the electronic health record and assist with additional background-maintenance tasks.
  • Assist the supervisor and administration with escalated patient account issues and resolve high-priority accounts quickly, accurately, and professionally.
  • Act as a point of contact and resource for faculty, staff, and students regarding coding, accounting, account assistance, and policy questions.
  • Provide teaching and guidance to students regarding patient coding, patient estimates, account management, and financial treatment plans.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with patients, payers, team members, and clients.
  • Complete special projects and other assigned duties.
