Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or Biomedical Engineering; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 15+ years of experience in medical device or similarly regulated hardware product development and sustaining engineering, with 5+ years leading multi-site teams.
  • Proven success managing sustaining and reliability engineering for complex electromechanical systems and disposable devices.
  • Deep understanding of design controls, change management, risk management (ISO 14971), and post-market surveillance in a regulated environment.
  • Strong organizational development experience - capable of building new teams, defining processes, and scaling operations internationally.
  • Fluency in English and Mandarin, with demonstrated success managing and mentoring teams across both Western and Chinese cultural environments.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 50%.
Responsibilities
  • Define and execute the vision for Product Engineering across Capital and Consumables, evolving the function from reactive support to a proactive, data-driven organization focused on reliability, quality, and cost improvements.
  • Build and lead a high-performing, multidisciplinary engineering organization spanning mechanical, electrical, software, reliability, and manufacturing engineering functions in both the U.S. and China.
  • Develop and execute a global organizational growth plan, including talent strategy, operating model, communication cadence, and cross-site collaboration frameworks.
  • Establish and continuously improve engineering processes, metrics, and governance for sustaining engineering, design transfer, field issue triage, and change management.
  • Act as a senior member of the R&D leadership team, contributing to long-term product architecture, platform strategy, and operational scalability.
  • Own the post-launch product lifecycle from sustaining engineering through end-of-life, including field escalations, redesign initiatives, reliability improvements, and cost optimization.
  • Partner with Manufacturing, Quality, Field Service, and Supply Chain to identify and resolve issues impacting product reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability.
  • Drive proactive improvement roadmaps and resource allocation plans, presenting time-phased proposals and ROI analyses to the executive team.
  • Ensure efficient and compliant execution of design changes and field corrective actions in accordance with design controls, risk management, and quality system regulations (21 CFR 820, ISO 13485, IEC 60601).
  • Serve as the technical and organizational bridge between R&D, Operations, Quality, and Service teams to accelerate resolution of systemic product issues.
  • Lead executive-level updates and communications on product performance, risks, and mitigation strategies.
  • Foster strong alignment across sites and cultures through transparent communication, shared goals, and effective remote collaboration practices.
  • Build and maintain relationships with contract manufacturers, suppliers, and external engineering partners in both regions.
  • Institutionalize root cause analysis, failure analysis, and closed-loop corrective action systems across products and sites.
  • Drive adoption of Design for Manufacturability, Design for Reliability, and Design for Service principles across both new and sustaining products.
  • Leverage lessons learned and field data to inform new product designs and strengthen system architecture for long-term scalability.
  • Develop and standardize KPIs for reliability, serviceability, redesign cycle time, and product uptime.

  • Experience leading engineering organizations in high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with contract manufacturer management and supplier quality systems in China or Southeast Asia.
  • Demonstrated success in implementing proactive reliability and cost reduction programs.
  • Excellent communication, executive presentation, and cross-functional leadership skills.
