Responsibilities
  • Conduct independent research projects aligned with the laboratory’s scientific mission and disseminate findings through publications and presentations at scientific meetings.
  • Develop a hypothesis-driven research plan describing materials and methods, experimental design, and anticipated outcomes before initiating experiments.
  • Establish and optimize efficient genome-editing pipelines in the emergent model species Rorippa aquatica.
  • Lead a small team of research technologists and engineers conducting functional genomics and developmental biology research on plant epidermal and stomatal development adapted to submergence.
  • Study the developmental biology and cell biology of amphibious plants using molecular genetics, genome editing, molecular biology, cell biology, genomics, epigenomics, proteomics, and related experimental techniques.
  • Collaborate with researchers and research technologists to develop a genome-editing system in Rorippa aquatica for functional genomics and developmental biology research.
  • Collect, curate, organize, and analyze data; perform bioinformatic analyses; run computational pipelines; and survey scientific literature.
  • Document laboratory notebooks and organize research materials and data, including plasmids, seeds, DNA oligos, plants, confocal image files, and RNA-seq files, according to laboratory guidelines.
  • Maintain, manage, and operate critical laboratory equipment; maintain growth rooms; care for plants; harvest seeds; wash dishes; and water plants on weekends as necessary.
  • Take responsibility for specific equipment in which the postdoctoral fellow has strong expertise.
  • Train and mentor junior researchers, including undergraduates and technicians.
  • Participate in and present at weekly laboratory meetings, departmental seminars, BioTACOS, and scientific conferences and workshops.
  • Write technical reports, review articles, fellowship applications, scientific manuscripts, and grant materials; provide preliminary data for grants; and assist with grant writing.
