The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco (CZ Biohub SF) (https://www.czbiohub.org/sf/) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.
Our Vision
- We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments
- We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas
- The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond
Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.
The Opportunity
The Royer Group (https://www.czbiohub.org/royer/) is recruiting for an Application Engineer with experience in operating and controlling advanced optomechanical instruments. A successful candidate will align, operate, and maintain advanced optical microscopes. In this position, you will also collaborate with biologists to conceive and plan their experiments, learning our advanced methods for image processing and analysis, as well as partnering with the rest of the team of software engineers, computer vision experts, and instrument designers.
What You’ll Do
- Maintain, align, and continue to customize state-of-the-art light sheet microscopes for different experimental conditions to enable robust live imaging of zebrafish embryos and larvae on multiple state-of-the-art instruments
- Work with biologists as an application specialist, helping in experimental design, microscope automation, data handling, and image processing
- Collaborate with optical engineers in the design and construction of new customized light sheet microscopes.
- Work with data scientists to understand and apply new methods for image analyses
- Perform computer hardware and software troubleshooting (e.g. drivers, software installation/troubleshooting, PCI card installation, etc.)
What You’ll Bring
Essential –
- Bachelor or Master of Science degree in engineering, instrumentation, robotics, electronics, or optics
- Minimum 1 year hands-on experience with advanced microscopy
- Any ‘extra-curricular’ evidence of exceptional abilities in the disciplines above, such as hobby projects in robotics, electronics, optics, etc. is extremely welcome
- Hands-on experience operating, aligning, or maintaining optomechanical instruments.
- Experience coding for hardware control, automation, and instrumentation
- Experience with electronics for instrumentation
- Experience or interest in applying 3D image processing and analysis algorithms in python
- Collaborative spirit and teamwork skills are absolutely essential
