Responsibilities
  • Direct all teams responsible for integrating Generation Resources and Large Loads into the ERCOT System, from initial application through commissioning and approval for commercial operations.
  • Direct the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of generation and large load interconnection processes, including screening studies, full interconnection studies, modeling requirements, and energization approval workflows.
  • Direct the development of revisions to ERCOT Protocols, Planning and Operating Guides, and internal procedures to accommodate new technologies and fulfill ERCOT reliability requirements.
  • Direct cross-functional teams and matrixed work efforts aligning Interconnection, Network Modeling, Planning, Markets, and Operations on interconnection policy, study standards, and implementation practices.
  • Direct the long-term development and maintenance of tools and data flows, including RIOO platforms, Network Operations Model interfaces, analytics, and interconnection dashboards, used to submit, validate, track, and analyze Generation Resource and Large Load data.
  • Direct the evaluation of interconnection study results and recommendations, ensuring consistent treatment across generation and load types and alignment with NERC, ERCOT, and PUCT reliability requirements.
  • Represent ERCOT on interconnection matters in external meetings with the PUCT, stakeholders, policymakers, NERC, NAESB, and other regional and national policy groups.
  • Direct the development and maintenance of reports and metrics on interconnection queue status, study timelines, performance against targets, and emerging trends in resource and load additions.
  • Direct coordination with System Planning and Operations to ensure interconnection study assumptions, models, and criteria are consistent with regional planning and operational reliability needs.
  • Direct the identification of staffing, skill, and tool requirements to support current and future interconnection volumes and provide guidance and mentorship to supervisors and managers supporting grid interconnections.
  • Direct the development and execution of departmental operating and maintenance and capital budgets for grid interconnections, consistent with organizational policies and strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

(ERCOT) today announced a collaboration with The University of Texas (UT) at Austin to study how fast-growing inverter-based technologies, like those used in solar, wind, and battery storage systems, can enhance grid reliability. Today's announcement is part of ERCOT's ongoing efforts to utilize emerging technologies and innovation to meet growing electric demand. Inverter-based technologies generate electricity as Direct Current (DC) - the same type of power stored in a household battery - which must be converted to Alternating Current (AC) before it can flow into the grid. This conversion is handled automatically by an electronic device called an inverter. As these technologies become an increasingly larger part of the grid, understanding their impact is critical to maintaining reliable power for Texas homes and businesses. As part of ERCOT's Grid Research, Innovation, and Transformation (GRIT) program, UT will help ERCOT anticipate challenges related to simulation platforms, control interactions, and power quality issues that may come with very high penetrations of inverter-based resources on the Texas electric grid.
