Innovation Engineering Department
The Innovation Engineering team is responsible for the development of standards, templates, specifications, and owner’s requirements documents in support of Vantage’s global growth, most notably leading the Vantage prototyping effort known as OneDesign.
The team collaborates with all multi-functional teams within Vantage to drive prototypical designs for global deployment to ensure high quality, consistent product deployments in alignment with constantly evolving internal and external customer requirements. In addition to standards development, the Innovation Engineering team is responsible for leading due diligence assessment of merger and acquisition opportunity, and development of design requirements for customer build to suit opportunities.
Position Overview
Vantage is looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to be part of the Innovation Engineering team that leads the standardization of products across Vantage’s companywide portfolio.
In this role you will be responsible for design development of large-scale industrial chiller plants and develop associated standards and specification, to enable establishing a procurement program.
Regular collaboration and coordination will be required with architects, other engineering fields, procurement, and facility operations team. You will work with the regional design and execution teams to ensure that new standards are established, and existing standards are implemented and coordinate any enhancements required to be incorporated into the standard design and specifications.
Knowledge of all aspects of mechanical engineering is required, including central utility plants, built-up mechanical rooms, packaged equipment, chilled water equipment and piping, DX systems, airside and water-side economization, humidity control, raised access floor plenums, and value engineering as they relate to designing state-of-the-art datacenters. Knowledge in the areas of plumbing and fire protection design for data centers is helpful.
This role is fully remote in the US, travel is required (see Job Requirements).
Own the design and engineering efforts for large scale industrial chilled water plants, including equipment selection, general layout and arrangement, piping design and controls integration.
Perform load calculations, pipe sizing, selection of chillers, pumps, heat exchangers, dry-coolers, and other mechanical equipment.
Developmaintain and update specification and standards for chiller plants.
Evaluate and recommend innovative solution and methodologies to optimize chiller plant operational efficiency.
Collaborate with electrical counterparts to develop optimized designs.
Collaborate with design consultants and be responsible for completion of program level initiatives.
Visit manufacturing plants for Factory Witness Testing (FWT) of critical equipment.
Participate in new product development process from inception to implementation and apply for and obtain patents for the company to retain its IP.
Research and evaluate new vendors and products with a goal to achieve operational improvement, reduce project cost and improve project schedule.
Review and approve OFCI equipment submittals to ensure they follow company specifications and coordinate the details with other teams.
Coordinate with regional design execution teams to understand OPR deviations and lessons learned on projects.
Conduct analysis to determine if the OPR deviations and/or lessons learned from site-adapt projects can be applied to improve Vantage standards and specifications.
Participate in creating and standardizing mechanical sequence of operations (SOOs) in coordination with internal automation teams.
Conduct value engineering analyses and provide system recommendations based on return on investment and IRR analysis.
Identify and create tools and templates that will add new value to the products delivered to our internal and external customers.
Standardize documentation for commissioning of mechanical systems for global application.
Work closely with Operations to find a balance between cost-effective solutions & operational sustainability.
Work on optimizing design to meet Sustainability targets set forth by the company.
Utilize engineering analysis programs and professional judgment to analyze the following:
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) studies and Rack Layout Optimization.
Psychrometric chart evaluation, ASHRAE extreme annual design day temperatures and relative impact to supply air temperatures.
Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) calculations & Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE).

Additional Information
Salary Range: $160,000 - $175,000 Base + Bonus (this range is based on Colorado market data and may vary in other locations)
