Job Description Summary

The Scientist I, under general supervision, performs bacteriologic tests and participates in the daily testing operations in the Bacteriology section, including applying classical bacteriological techniques for identification of microbial organisms (primarily bacteria and fungi), performing antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and the operation of automated bacterial identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing systems (MALDI-TOF, Sensititre, BioMIC). Assists in review, finalization, and release of cases in LIMS; assists section leadership in reviewing and determining action on "hold" cases and problem cases; makes decisions regarding sample set-up; answers telephone calls from clients requesting preliminary results and general testing information; communicates results and provides interpretation to appropriate individuals.

Responsibilities

The Scientist I ensures implementation of quality control/assurance and safety in the laboratory which may include writing, reviewing, and revising SOPs and controlled documents, teaching/training/mentoring Technician(s) in diagnostic techniques, and identifying and documenting/correcting nonconforming work when necessary. Assists in implementing new/updated diagnostic capabilities. Being detailed-oriented and keeping appropriate records is required. This role requires performance of routine and non-routine tasks of moderate to advanced complexity, regularly exercising independent decision-making, and having the ability to troubleshoot routine and complex problems with and/or without supervision.

Testing: Performs daily routine diagnostic testing, including filling in for technical staff when necessary. Troubleshoots complex assay or instrument problems by recognizing sources of possible errors and implementing steps for resolution of errors or process improvements. The Bacteriology Section is a high-volume laboratory that conducts hundreds of tests daily on animal samples submitted by veterinarians and animal owners. Timeliness, accuracy, and the ability to remain focused in a high-volume work environment are vital in this position, as well as a service mindset and strong work ethic.

Data Entry, Interpretation, Results: Reads, interprets, and records observations, results, and measurements into LIMS. Ensures documentation for all tests meets quality assurance requirements. Reviews, releases, and publishes accurate results. Recognizes abnormal results requiring further review, resolving unexpected results as appropriate. Ensures confidentiality of correspondence and reports.

Client Communication: Communicates with clients, via phone or writing, test results, interpretations, recommendations, and answers complex questions. Ensures confidentiality of correspondence and reports.

Quality Assurance & Safety: Assists section managers with audits and visits by external clientele and agencies. Ensures safe handling and disposal of infectious agents and chemical hazards, ships infectious agents and performs accompanying paperwork. Identifies incidents of non-conformance and noncompliance. Ensures documentation for all testing meets quality assurance standards. Performs training and testing within established turnaround times.

SOPs, Procedures, Forms, Other Documentation: Reviews and recommends changes or improvements to section SOPS, procedures, forms or other documentation related to section protocols. Serves as the subject matter expert on procedures conducted by the section, including antimicrobial susceptibility tests and bacterial culture results.

Research and Development: Participates in, and may lead, research and development efforts involving new assay development, validation, instrument configuration, and documentation of assay protocols. Proactively seeks opportunities to develop new diagnostic capabilities and present R&D recommendations to management.

Supplies, Stock, Inventory, Equipment: May oversee calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Works with vendors and contractors to ensure timely service. May order supplies and keep stock inventory.

Training and Mentorship: Assists in training fellow Scientists and Technicians in new methods, quality assurance, safety, or equipment methods.

Supervisory, Evaluation, Employee Support: Supports Lab Supervisor, Assistant Section Head, and Section Head with oversight of technical staff performing routine testing, as directed.

Teamwork and Cooperation: Collaborates with colleagues in other sections, TVMDL locations and other veterinary diagnostic laboratories across the country in development and pursuit of scientific advancement. Fosters laboratory teamwork, cooperation, professional standards, and communications. Participates in industry recognized meetings and affiliations to gain knowledge within the relevant scientific disciplines and industries.  

Other: Work shall be performed in accordance with validated test methods, SOPs, procedures, employee training and proficiency and equipment standards, as applicable. Work shall be performed with adherence to federal, state, Texas A&M University System and TVMDL safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Ensures adherence and compliance with TVMDL Quality Assurance Manual and associated quality assurance procedures. All work shall be performed in such a way as to not expose others or self to hazards that are avoidable by reasonable and approved methods. Performs other job related duties as required.

Additional Position Details:

• This position is required to work onsite during normal business hours M-F 8 AM to 5 PM with occasional work shifts on weekends and holidays.
• TVMDL is located on the campus of Texas A&M University (TAMU). Parking permits are available from TAMU at the expense of the employee. 
• Incumbent will be required to take a pre-exposure rabies vaccination series; TVMDL will cover all costs.
• TVMDL is considered an essential component of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) and remains operational for several “open holidays” in which overtime or compensatory time may be earned. For information on TVMDL’s holiday schedule, visit our website.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Two years of related experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, food science, or other applicable field with emphasis on microbiology experience plus 4 years of microbiology laboratory experience, or equivalent combination of education and (e.g., Master’s degree plus 2 years of experience) OR advanced degree (e.g., Master’s, DVM, PhD) in a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Two or more years of experience with routine bacteriology testing procedures. Experience with quality control/assurance.
• Laboratory experience must be related to diagnostic bacteriology, scientific research, or experimental work in a related field.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to work with minimal technical supervision and exercise considerable independent decision making while doing different tests in the Bacteriology Section.
• Able to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficient in bacteriology techniques.
• Knowledge of animal pathogens, classical bacteriology, and zoonotic diseases. Thorough knowledge of concepts, practices, and standard laboratory procedures, including safety procedures.
• Proficient in operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, online database/Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
• Ability to perform and troubleshoot various testing methodologies and instruments, interpret quality control and laboratory data, and recommend solutions.

Preferred Registrations, Certifications and Licenses:

• For Bachelor’s level applicants: Licensed Veterinary Technologist (LVT), Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT), or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification.
