Lake County businesses support Painesville student as she pursues construction career.

Lake County businesses support Painesville student as she pursues construction career. All Contractors Supply, Alba Contractors, ABC Supply gift student tools. PUBLISHED: March 24, 2026 at 6:03 AM EDT Three Mentor-based, women-owned construction companies - All Contractors Supply, Alba Contractors and ABC Supply - recently came together to gift a box of tools to one high school student to help her pursue a career in construction. Kamari Elder, a Thomas W. Harvey High School student, is currently involved in Painesville City Schools' construction and internship program According to Heidi Fyffe, director of state and federal programs for the district, both programs Elder is in are high-powered programs the city has in place to allow students to pursue careers, not just jobs. "We're trying to - for students and women in our school district - promote something like this on a level they are able to not just have a job, but a career," Fyffe said. "If (Elder) decides to not go to college, she already has this group of women who are willing to support her and help her get started in the right direction." Kamari Elder, a Painesville City Schools student who is passioned to pursue a career in construction, was recently gifted with a box of tools from Mentor-based, women-owned construction companies. (Marah Morrison - The News-Herald) All Contractors Supply President and CEO Kim Gilmore said it's important to know that the construction world is not just about jackhammering and doing the hard lifting. "There are other areas you can go into and just be in a male-dominated world," she said. "It doesn't have to be about your strength, so you can be just as equal. You just got to find that area where you have the common ground and the best wins." Gilmore said it's not easy to go into a male-dominated industry, however, she's been in it for the last 25 years and has no plans to get out of it. "You have to have a backbone. However, once you're in it, you love it," she said. "I want to get out there into the trades and let the girls know there's other areas." Reaching out to other women-owned businesses in the construction industry is a part of Gilmore's goals going forward. "We've got strong women in different areas of the construction industry that we can come together," she said. What motivated Elder to get into construction is her passion for learning and building things on her own so she doesn't need any help. "I'd rather do it myself - plumbing, electricity, building things," she said. "My grandparents were heavy into the construction industry. They mostly worked in roads, but now, other family members do plumbing and electricity, which I find cool because you could just handle it yourself. Having the knowledge and the skills to do it yourself is what passioned me to try to reach for it." Elder finds an interest in building homes in the future. "Something about building my own stuff and fixing my own things makes me feel so much better," she said. "I'm just happy about it." Gilmore said this is her second time doing this for a student and it was this year she wanted to make it bigger in light of Women in Construction Week. "I reached out to two other women construction companies - Alba and ABC Supply," she said. "If anybody's interested in doing this with me next year, please contact me. I want to make this bigger. Primarily, I'm doing Lake County, so if there's other women who want to branch out, we can connect." Fyffe echoed Gilmore's thoughts in that she would like to see this expand. "We do have our own career tech programming - all Painesville specific for our students that we house around the city in connection with the city, but also with Painesville City Schools," she said, noting that the programming is all grant funded. "We do this all out of grants we write or work on to be able to do that for our students." Fyffe encourages women to not be afraid to jump in this industry even though it's male-dominated. "We need to insert ourselves and show them we can do it," she said. "(Elder) is one of our leading students and it's nice to see that. We've had this program for five years now. She's our third girl. I would love to see it multiply." For Elder, long-term goals include moving out of the country, but as for now, graduating high school and "seeing where the wind takes her" are her priorities. She plans to look into different careers to see what she likes best and where she fits best. Elder encourages other women interested in this industry to believe in themselves. "Be well-spoken about things because once you do communicate with people, you find more opportunities," she said. "Don't hold back. Go with it."
