Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • The applicant should demonstrate effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • The applicant should have organizational skills and attention to detail, the ability to multitask, flexibility, effective time management, manual dexterity, and the ability to perform repetitive motions.
  • The applicant should have proficiency with personal computers, including Microsoft Office.
  • The applicant should be able to perform specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
  • Employees may be required to work with, take specific precautions against, and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
Responsibilities
  • Under minimal supervision, perform specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
  • Use independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques.
  • Assist in protocol design.
  • Investigate and propose alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.
  • Assist in planning and scheduling research procedures.
  • Analyze and interpret study results.
  • Demonstrate and train others in the proper use and operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform routine repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Review literature for related research developments and techniques and compile findings.
  • Monitor laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.
  • Record study results, compile and analyze data, and prepare charts and graphs.
  • Monitor the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances.
  • Order and ship supplies.
  • Plate specimens and isolate, identify, freeze, and catalog bacteria from clinical and non-clinical specimens.
  • Perform molecular microbiologic testing using polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis, and related methods.
  • Prepare overnight cultures, plates, media, and buffers.
  • Maintain the laboratory, including biohazard discarding and autoclaving of reusable products.
  • Maintain protocols and approvals.
  • Filter water and other environmental substrates and perform sampling methods.
  • Enter study-related data into computer databases.
  • Maintain and submit laboratory work documentation to the principal investigator or designee.
  • Perform related responsibilities as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related science and two years of research experience, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Experience in a bacteriology wet laboratory, conventional and real-time polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequence preparation and analysis beyond classroom experience with bacteriology.
  • Experience ordering supplies and shipping biological materials.
  • Experience in manuscript and/or grant writing.
  • Interest in field work.
  • Coursework including bacteriology, microbiology, and molecular laboratory components.
