- A high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses or training equivalent to completion of one year of college in utilities maintenance and repair or closely related training.
- Six months of experience in water or wastewater repair and maintenance or closely related experience.
- Must be able to obtain a valid Class B commercial driver's license, including General Knowledge, Tanker, and Air Brakes, within the first six months following employment.
- Must be able to obtain Water Distribution, Water Production, Water Treatment, Wastewater Collection, and Wastewater Treatment certifications within the first three years following employment.
- Ability to operate and care for hand and power tools and other equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, perform heavy physical labor, establish and maintain cooperative relationships, and estimate material and labor needs.
- Ability to analyze and evaluate situations and use independent judgment and initiative to take effective action.
- Skill in safe work practices and in the standard tools, materials, methods, and practices involved in sewer and water line maintenance.
- Ability to perform medium to heavy work involving walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing, and raising objects, including regularly exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force and occasionally exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force.
- Conduct construction, repair, and maintenance of water and wastewater lines and equipment, including valves, fittings, and taps.
- Conduct new construction and installation of water and wastewater lines and equipment.
- Perform basic maintenance, lubrication, and repair of equipment and facilities.
- Operate vehicles and equipment, including backhoes, dump trucks, and front-end loaders.
- Perform maintenance, repair, and construction of plants and facilities.
- Operate hand and power tools and equipment to service or maintain city facilities or grounds.
- Assume considerable responsibility for the safety and health of self and others and continuously enforce public health and safety laws and standards.
