EDF Trading is an asset-backed trader in wholesale energy markets, handling power, natural gas, oil, LPG, and environmental products, with a strong LNG position through a partnership with JERA Global Markets. It structures and negotiates large, international energy transactions for EDF Group customers and other clients, across Europe, North America, and Asia. The company’s products rely on backing trades with physical assets and offering risk-management solutions to manage price and supply risks in the energy sector. Compared with competitors, EDF Trading emphasizes its asset-backed trading model, its global footprint, and its integrated risk-management capabilities, including a notable LNG partnership. Its goal is to facilitate and hedge energy trades for major customers worldwide, expanding asset-backed trading activity and providing clients with practical risk-management tools.

What believers are saying

  • EDF expanded its JERA JV in April 2025 to include Japanese power trading, creating a global arbitrage entity[2][9].
  • Houston expansion into 8,973 sq ft deepens North American gas trading, with occupancy set for December 1, 2024[2][7].
  • Near fivefold LNG liquefaction capacity growth from 2025–2028 boosts arbitrage opportunities for asset-backed traders like EDF[1][11].

What critics are saying

  • 2024 EBITDA dropped 50% to €1.6B due to falling wholesale prices and lower volatility, eroding profit margins[1].
  • JERA Global Markets merger shifts Japanese power revenue to JERA, weakening EDF's Asian asset-backed positioning[2][9].
  • Houston expansion increases U.S. regulatory exposure under FERC and CFTC, raising compliance costs amid volatile gas spreads[2][7].

What makes EDFT unique

  • EDF Trading operates as a global asset-backed trader covering power, gas, oil, LNG, and environmental products[1][2].
  • It merges physical asset optimization with wholesale trading, enabling sourcing, storage, blending, and conversion globally[1][5].
  • The firm uniquely manages price arbitrage between Atlantic and Pacific basins via its JERA Global Markets JV[2][9].
