Requirements
  • An engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Consumer Electronics, or an equivalent field is required.
  • Proven experience designing lab or development fixtures, jigs, or rigs, or a track record of shipping physical products with a desire to build the tools behind them is required.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, including complex assembly modelling and 2D drawings with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, is required.
  • Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping and in-house fabrication, including 3D printing, Computer Numerical Control machining, and off-the-shelf framing systems, is required.
  • Ability to integrate electronics and instrumentation into fixtures and enclosures with reliable measurement access is required.
  • Strong understanding of tolerancing, repeatability, and fixture accuracy, with the ability to work to tight positional constraints, is required.
  • Experience with mechanism and actuation design, including clamping, alignment, and pneumatic systems, is a strong plus.
  • Basic Finite Element Analysis and thermal or Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis to validate designs is a nice-to-have.
Responsibilities
  • Design fixtures, jigs, enclosures, and bench structures in SolidWorks with full integration of electronics and instrumentation, maintaining complete 2D drawings with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing to guarantee fixture precision and repeatability.
  • Design manual and pneumatic clamping, alignment, and actuation mechanisms for repeatable and ergonomic positioning of prototypes during bring-up and characterisation.
  • Build fixtures rapidly in-house using 3D printing, Computer Numerical Control machining, and aluminium framing, and work with quick-turn suppliers to iterate based on hands-on validation with tooling hardware and software engineers.
  • Own the development of bench and lab fixtures, environmental and reliability validation rigs, instrument and Data Acquisition enclosures, Radio Frequency and antenna characterisation mechanics, and modular bench structures for research and development teams.
  • Validate fixture repeatability, durability over many cycles, and operator ergonomics, using basic Finite Element Analysis and thermal or Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis where required to confirm designs.
  • Manage quick-turn machining and printing suppliers, specify framing hardware, and drive procurement with Supply Chain.
  • Define and maintain a modular, reusable fixture-mechanics standard across product teams to reduce bring-up time and improve characterisation repeatability.
  • Maintain fixture designs, drawings, build instructions, and maintenance records as the single source of truth for the team.

Harmattan AI designs and manufactures autonomous aerial systems for defense. Its portfolio includes training drones, surveillance drones, and high-velocity interceptor drones, all built to operate with minimal human input. The products combine hardware and a software-driven autonomy stack that uses real-time sensing, computer vision, and machine learning to make decisions on the battlefield. The systems are designed for high-volume, attritable production and rapid software updates, aiming to be deployed and scaled across allied forces. The company differentiates itself by focusing on full hardware production and integration for governments and NATO partners, rather than just pilots or prototypes, and by pursuing software-defined, modular, and easily updatable platforms. Harmattan AI’s goal is to become a major European supplier of autonomous defense systems across multiple theatres, producing thousands of units per month and supporting deployments in diverse security environments.

What believers are saying

  • June 2026 France renewed Sonora orders fivefold after delivering 1,000 units in six months.
  • July 2026 NAMIB proved Harmattan AI systems can geolocate radars and cue Rafales.
  • January 2026 Dassault partnership expanded Harmattan AI's addressable market across air combat and electronic warfare.

What critics are saying

  • Helsing, Stark, Rheinmetall, and Baykar are scaling faster and already contest European drone orders.
  • Reliance on French and UK procurement concentrates revenue; one canceled program breaks the story.
  • High-volume battlefield drones face combat attrition, export controls, and accident liability before 2027.

What makes Harmattan AI unique

  • 2026 Series B at $1.4 billion anchors Harmattan AI as France's defense unicorn.
  • Dassault Aviation integration ties Harmattan AI directly into Rafale F5 and future combat systems.
  • Sonora delivers attritable, software-defined drones and interceptors with claimed thousands-per-month manufacturing.

Rafale and drone complete collaborative electronic warfare flight with new NAMIB payload

Dassault Aviation and Harmattan AI have successfully tested NAMIB, a new electronic warfare payload, during a collaborative flight with a Rafale F4 fighter jet. The system, mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle, detected and geolocated a radar several dozen kilometres away, transmitting target coordinates to the Rafale for a simulated strike. NAMIB can detect, identify, and geolocate electromagnetic emissions from air defence systems. It operates on tactical drones and fixed-wing unmanned aircraft. Development began in January 2026 as part of a strategic partnership between the two companies. The test demonstrates the Rafale's multi-domain combat capabilities and its ability to integrate with autonomous systems. Harmattan AI is a defence technology company specialising in autonomous robotic systems for contested environments.
