Responsibilities
  • Follow appropriate Infection Control policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of decontamination, packaging and sterilization of instrumentation and supplies.
  • Demonstrate accountability for the patient care environment including reporting malfunctioning equipment, maintenance of instrumentation and matters of patient safety.
  • Perform assigned patient care tasks under the direction and supervision of a designated Registered Nurse and work under the direction of the surgeon for procedural related tasks.
  • Assess and anticipate needed supplies for scheduled and emergent procedures, determine comfort and safety measures for individual patients, and anticipate the needs of the surgeon to expedite the procedure by passing instruments, sponges and sutures.
  • Prepare the operating room according to a particular surgical procedure with the assistance of other personnel in accordance with procedures for disinfection of furniture and equipment.
  • Exercise proper sterile technique, open and arrange sterile field in accordance with accepted protocol for each surgical procedure, both routine and special procedures.
  • Utilize equipment and supplies efficiently, manage charges for and assure replacement of medical and surgical supplies.
  • Daily and periodic checks, restock, and inventory supplies (check, rotate dated items and reorders) as assigned or needed for surgery and other procedures within the unit.
  • Assist in clearing the operating room for the next procedure including appropriate disposal of contaminated linen and waste, cleaning instruments when necessary and disinfecting equipment.
  • Participate in counts with the circulating nurse to ensure all counts are correct.
  • Serve as a preceptor and mentor by fostering a teaching environment.
  • Collaborate with the Registered Nurse to update the nursing plan of care and recommend interventions to meet identified patient goals.
  • Evaluate and recommend updates to surgeon preference cards and notify appropriate personnel of needed changes.
  • Label drugs on the field, prepare labels and verify specimens according to protocol and surgeons' preference.
  • Use proper documentation related to sterilization procedures.
  • Sign/verify initials on instrument count sheet and sign preference list when pulling a case is completed.
  • Precept new staff and student populations sharing knowledge of procedures to enhance learning.
  • Participate in peer review as requested.
  • Coordinate treatments and procedures to facilitate cost effective patient care.
  • Provide input for new policies, procedures, meeting minutes and memos.
  • Contribute to the development and revision of standards/policies as needs are identified. Identify and utilize information from monitors and research to effect changes in practice.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of emergency protocol in the event of an emergent procedure by ensuring surgical set-ups necessary to manage an emergency.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
