Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Graduation from an accredited vocational nursing program is required.
- Three years of experience in an acute care or ambulatory care setting are required.
- The ability to work effectively with physicians, staff, and patients is required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, computer systems, and internet access and utilization is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills are required to handle sensitive situations and confidential information.
- The ability to make decisions effectively with appropriate stakeholder input is required.
- A valid California Vocational Nursing license is required.
- Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
- Fire Life Safety Training from the City of Los Angeles is required; employees without a card upon hire must obtain it within 30 days and maintain it by renewal before expiration.
- Licensed Vocational Nurse intravenous therapy certification is required.
- Keck Program Preceptor Certification is required; new hires must obtain it within 90 days or by the next available class.
Responsibilities
- Assist registered nurses or medical providers with therapeutic patient care under their direction.
- Use basic assessment, participate in care planning, execute interventions, and contribute to evaluation of individualized care-plan or treatment-plan interventions.
- Escort patients to exam rooms, obtain and record vital signs and medication lists, monitor patient flow, and prepare patient charts with pertinent medical information.
- Assist physicians with examinations, treatments, minor clinical procedures, special procedures, minor surgical procedures, and diagnostic examinations as permitted by the license.
- Perform electrocardiograms, administer medications as directed by physicians, and administer a broader range of medications including injections and intravenous medications.
- Provide direct patient care and assess and monitor patient conditions, notifying physicians or other healthcare professionals as appropriate.
- Communicate with patients and multidisciplinary teams for patient care and education.
- Schedule diagnostic tests ordered by physicians and schedule and receive patients.
- Prepare and maintain medical records.
- Answer patient telephone calls, return calls, receive and sort incoming faxes, and obtain prior authorizations.
- Enter charges into the system accurately and promptly.
- Handle telephone calls, write correspondence, and serve as a liaison between physicians and other individuals.
- Take patient histories and vital signs and implement effective patient flow.
- Perform first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation when needed.
- Organize pharmacy refill requests for physician approval.
- Provide patients with medical information and education according to established protocols and guidelines.
- Triage patients in person and by telephone.
- Maintain patient privacy, safety, and confidentiality, maintain a safe environment, and comply with infection-control policies.
