Requirements
  • The candidate must be licensed in Virginia or hold a valid multistate compact license issued by the applicant's primary state of residence.
  • The candidate must complete Basic Life Support training and recertification every two years.
  • The candidate must maintain current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification and Licensed Practical Nurse licensure.
  • The candidate must complete annual recertification for blood-borne pathogens, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act compliance training, respiratory fit testing, and information technology policy training.
Responsibilities
  • Triage incoming patients by obtaining vital signs, following standing triage orders, reconciling medication lists and allergies, ensuring immunizations are up to date, and preparing patients for visits.
  • Complete delegated patient messages, prescription refills, lab results, referrals, home health requests, medication prior authorizations, patient forms, and physician follow-up before the close of each business day.
  • Perform point-of-care testing and collect laboratory specimens for further processing.
  • Assist physicians with examinations, minor surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.
  • Provide basic patient care and education as directed by providers and standing orders.
  • Maintain cleanliness in treatment areas and ensure examination rooms are stocked with necessary medical instruments and supplies, checking that stocked items are not expired.
  • Clean, sterilize, and maintain used instrumentation according to department protocol.
  • Assist supervisors in training new staff members.
  • Fill in for other clinical staff during vacations and illness and perform other duties assigned by providers or supervisors at the Ghent and Portsmouth Family Medicine sites.
  • Respond to questions from patients, family members, faculty, residents, and other health care providers in a timely and professional manner.
  • Document patient conversations and attempted contacts in the electronic medical record.
  • Follow medical group protocols related to infection control, environmental safety, and patient confidentiality.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous medical office experience with relevant skills is preferred.
  • Experience in a fast-paced ambulatory setting is desirable but not required.
