Why this top-ranked IBD 50 stock just plummeted on its earnings. * ALLISON GATLIN * Updated 05:08 PM ET 08/05/2026 IBD 50 stock Exelixis (EXEL) toppled late Wednesday on a mixed second-quarter report, as sales of its bread-and-butter cancer drug, cabozantinib, lagged expectations. The biotech company sells cabozantinib under the brand names Cabometyx and Cometriq. The former - a treatment for kidney, liver and thyroid cancers as well as neuroendocrine tumors - brought in $570.6 million in quarterly sales. Cometriq, which treats a form of thyroid cancer, generated $2.4 million in sales. But analysts called for a healthier $578 million and $3 million in sales, respectively. Biotech's Next Boom? Exelixis' sales disappointment. The sales disappointment led Exelixis to cut its earnings outlook for the year. The company now sees $2.5 billion to $2.55 billion in sales. At the midpoint, that's a drop of $50 million from Exelixis' prior guidance from three months ago. More promisingly, Exelixis topped earnings forecasts, reporting an adjusted 91 cents per share, vs. the Street's forecast for 85 cents, according to FactSet. Earnings grew more than 21% as total sales climbed close to 11%, reaching $627.8 million. That includes sales of Cabometyx and Cometriq, as well as $53.2 million in royalties from partners Ipsen and Takeda Pharmaceutical. But sales lagged projections for $636 million. Investors are now watching closely the next steps for zanzalintinib. The Food and Drug Administration is reviewing the experimental prostate cancer treatment for potential approval in December. US net product revenues from its cabozantinib franchise reached $555 million, whilst collaboration revenues rose to $55.8 million. The company achieved GAAP net income of $210.5 million and non-GAAP net income of $232.8 million. The US FDA accepted Exelixis's first NDA for zanzalintinib combined with atezolizumab for previously treated metastatic colorectal cancer, with a target action date of 3 December. The company is progressing multiple zanzalintinib clinical trials, including upcoming data readouts for STELLAR-303 and STELLAR-304 studies. Exelixis expects to complete its $750 million share repurchase programme this month. The Board authorised a new $750 million buyback programme through end-2027.
