Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited school in Mechanical Engineering or a technically related discipline is required.
  • A minimum of 4 years of professional experience in mechanical system design utilizing AutoCAD as the primary drafting tool is required.
  • Experience working with AutoCAD is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience with HVAC, chillers, boilers, pump hydraulics, exhaust, process chemicals, wastewater discharge, or similar mechanical building systems is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ASHRAE standards, NFPA codes for mechanical systems, and applicable state and local building codes is required.
  • Proven capacity to work under structured quality management and change control processes in complex project environments is required.
  • The ability to clearly communicate technical information and design concepts to project managers, contractors, and cross-disciplinary teams is required.
Responsibilities
  • Produce detailed engineering designs, technical project plans, specifications, drawings, and models that meet specifications and client needs.
  • Create, influence, and finalize designs involving industrial and domestic piping, plumbing, chillers, boilers, HVAC ducting, exhaust, motor control, process chemicals, wastewater discharge, fire protection systems, and other mechanical building systems.
  • Perform detailed mechanical system calculations, including load analysis, pump head curves, pressure drop, and energy consumption, to optimize system performance and support design decisions.
  • Apply standard engineering techniques and procedures, exercise judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications to design concepts, and ensure quality control by complying with company and team design and computer-aided design standards.
  • Work with the design team, other engineers, project managers, and stakeholders on assigned objectives, complex features, and solutions to unusual problems.
  • Facilitate internal and external design review meetings, ensure deliverables meet quality assurance standards and project milestones, and mitigate risks related to design errors or omissions.
  • Coordinate needs and designs with Electrical, Structural, Process/Chemical, Architectural, and other design disciplines for design package needs.
  • Perform field verifications and site walks to identify, verify, resolve, and incorporate solutions into design packages, and troubleshoot design problems in the field during construction when needed.
  • Manage technical inquiries, submittal reviews, and request for information responses from contractors and vendors, maintain version control, and support contractor coordination during procurement and installation phases.
Desired Qualifications
  • An active Professional Engineer license or the ability to obtain licensure quickly is highly desired.
  • Experience with Revit, Navisworks, PIPE-FLO, or similar hydraulic modeling software is a plus.

SHYFT Collective design team acquired by SSOE Group. SSOE Group, a global architecture and engineering firm headquartered in Toldeo, Ohio, announced the acquisition of Des Moines-based SHYFT Collective's architecture and design team to enhance its service capacity in the Des Moines and Columbus, Ohio, markets. "Our clients will continue working with the same trusted team, now supported by the scale and experience of SSOE," Steve Reynolds, founding partner and principal of SHYFT, said in a prepared statement. "SSOE brings the capacity and portfolio of a firm that successfully delivers projects of every size and complexity. With their resources behind us, we now can execute larger scopes and provide a full range of services under one roof while also creating more informed designs using computational and AI powered tools." The acquisition closed on Oct. 10, with Shyft Construction continuing to operate independently in the Iowa and Ohio markets.
