Requirements
  • An Associate Degree, or a high school diploma or equivalent combined with eight years of Sterile Processing experience.
  • Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association, or as a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution.
  • Certification as a Certified Instrument Specialist through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association, or as a Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, within six months of hire.
  • Certification as a Certified Healthcare Leader through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association, or as a Certified Sterile Processing Management professional through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, within one year of hire.
  • Five years of Sterile Processing, Surgical Technician, or Surgical Services Nursing experience.
  • Three years of supervisory, team leader, or coordinator experience.
  • Strong background knowledge of surgical and procedural environments and governing practice standards, including hygiene practices that reduce the risk of work-product contamination.
  • Strong background knowledge of sterile processing environments, including packaging systems, sterilization processes, and the care and handling of instrumentation and equipment.
  • English verbal and written proficiency to use high-level disinfection and sterilization guidelines and manufacturers' instructions for use.
  • Ability to independently plan, organize, and set priorities in routine or emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of automated materials management and operating-room or procedural-scheduling information system applications, as well as Microsoft Office functionalities.
  • Leadership skills to lead small work groups and present concepts to diverse audiences, along with analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Business knowledge of basic accounting, budgeting and distribution, electronic commerce, compliance, and systems management.
  • Ability to meet the Department of Labor's medium-duty physical standard, including exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, stand, and walk during an eight- to twelve-hour shift; lift up to 60 pounds; and push loaded carts weighing more than 200 pounds.
  • Ability to work in environments involving high-pressure steam, chemical, electrical, mechanical, bio-waste, stress, back-strain, and body-fluid hazards, with variations in temperature, noise, odors, and multiple stimuli.
  • Ability to work in personal protective equipment for extended periods.
Responsibilities
  • Manage, coordinate, and evaluate financial, material, and human resources for Sterile Processing services, including financial systems, support personnel, and management information systems.
  • Manage personnel and establish departmental staffing matrices to maintain an appropriately credentialed and clinically competent workforce; activate overtime when needed and maintain personnel records.
  • Oversee ongoing educational programs for professional and support staff, including new-employee orientation, needs assessments, annual competencies, continuing education, and new-equipment or systems training.
  • Provide employee performance feedback through goal development, peer evaluation, and performance evaluations; coach and counsel employees, develop action plans, conduct stay interviews, and hold touchpoints with new employees.
  • Lead quality-improvement and performance-improvement teams; identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality of care.
  • Assist the Perioperative Leadership team with developing, monitoring, and controlling cost-center budget accounts; monitor expenses and make recommendations concerning lost or replacement instrumentation.
  • Lead strategic planning and quality, performance, and patient-safety initiatives related to high-level disinfection, sterilization, and instrumentation transport.
  • Monitor and coordinate the capital-equipment purchase plan for Perioperative Services; analyze contracts and recommend equipment replacements and upgrades.
  • Develop product, equipment, and new-service proposals; investigate and recommend equipment needs and repairs.
  • Engage in fiscal activities to ensure timely and cost-effective availability of supplies, equipment, and human resources; participate in new-physician onboarding, prepare the departmental budget for presentation, and lead and report cost-saving initiatives.
  • Ensure documentation systems and reporting policies are implemented and periodically evaluated to meet standards and regulatory-agency requirements.
  • Work with system users and Information Technology to maximize the benefit of the operating-room management system.
  • Review workflow and staffing patterns to optimize productivity and cost-effective staffing; use lean methodologies to reduce departmental waste.
  • Communicate with medical staff, patients, employees, and departments to identify and resolve problems; perform daily problem resolution and troubleshooting using crucial-conversation and service-recovery communications.
  • Assess satisfaction issues, resolve them through daily rounds, lead employee-satisfaction action planning, and provide progress reports to staff.
  • Establish and implement a unit culture responsive to patients, providers, departments, and staff.
  • Support hospital, divisional, and departmental goals and serve as the hospital technical expert for sterile-processing functions supporting in-house departments and off-site ambulatory clinics.
  • Update technical knowledge to keep departmental operations aligned with national standards and participate in Leadership Forum development.
  • Ensure completion and evaluation of proficiency-testing procedures and assist leadership in coordinating departmental preparation for accrediting-agency inspections.
  • Lead the development, review, and communication of policies and procedures and ensure alignment with national standards and regulatory requirements.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Nursing, Business, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of information systems, inventory control, and supply chain processes, preferably in a healthcare setting.
