Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited School of Nursing is required.
  • Two years of nursing experience in a healthcare environment, including one year in the clinical field for which the candidate will work, is required.
  • Texas Registered Nurse licensure is required, with a permanent Texas license required within 60 days if establishing Texas residency.
  • Basic Life Support or Instructor certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Magnet ANCC-recognized certification is required.
  • The candidate must demonstrate the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job through ongoing skills and competency assessments and performance evaluations.
  • The candidate must be proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English as necessary to perform essential job functions affecting patient or employee safety and security.

Responsibilities
  • Provide professional direct patient nursing care to a diverse patient population as an advanced clinician at the proficient level of clinical practice.
  • Conduct nursing assessments, assist with examinations and treatment, and maintain medical records.
  • Coach and mentor department staff in clinical and professional practice.
  • Model compassionate communication with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team.
  • Lead unit and shared-governance activities and serve as charge nurse as needed.
  • Assess unit needs related to practice and improvement opportunities.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for unit and hospital staff.
  • Coordinate unit and hospital-wide education in partnership with management.
  • Identify staff-development opportunities, provide coaching, and oversee student and new-employee preceptorships.
  • Collaborate to foster healthy work-environment relationships, mitigate conflict, advocate for balanced workloads, promote positive behaviors, and support peer-to-peer accountability.
  • Improve nurse satisfaction by serving as a role model and mentor, facilitating teamwork, and providing recommendations to improve turnover and retention scores.
  • Lead patient- and family-centered care standards and mentor others regarding specialty populations.
  • Develop, update, and communicate plans of care, including discharge planning, with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team using the nursing process.
  • Prioritize care based on patient needs, abilities, and preferences and advocate for patients and families regarding clinical and ethical concerns.
  • Develop appropriate resources and support unit practices and guidelines.
  • Develop and implement patient-teaching strategies, evaluate patient comprehension, and adapt teaching methods.
  • Drive department activities to improve patient-satisfaction scores through peer-to-peer accountability.
  • Provide care as the staff-nurse leader for complex patients and lead the interprofessional healthcare team in implementing plans of care.
  • Recognize and resolve declines in patient condition and emergent situations, manage assignments of complex patients and unit demands, and respond to rapid responses, CERTs, and emergency codes.
  • Model regulatory and professional-practice standards and contribute to policies, procedures, protocols, service-line standards, and hospital guidelines.
  • Lead practice changes and performance-improvement opportunities, investigate and incorporate evidence-based practices, and lead quality and patient-safety initiatives.
  • Report near misses, identify solutions with the interprofessional team, audit plans of care, and audit other areas as needed.
  • Manage time and prioritize daily tasks while minimizing incidental overtime.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional healthcare team to facilitate efficient patient throughput.
  • Implement department strategies to achieve financial targets through timely documentation, reduced length of stay, optimized efficiency, and minimized incidental overtime.
  • Expand nursing knowledge, coach staff, serve as a clinical resource, and develop and disseminate educational resources and programs.
  • Support change initiatives and adapt to unexpected changes.
  • Lead or participate in unit projects and shared-governance activities to implement innovative solutions that improve patient care or unit operations.
  • Identify self-development needs, complete career discussions with management, and maintain the My Development Plan.
  • Wear scrubs and participate in on-call coverage during emergencies when required.
  • Travel within the Houston metropolitan area when required.
