Requirements
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree with a major in a related field and Florida Certified Firefighter and Florida Instructor Certification 1, 2, or 3 are required.
  • Ability to teach a minimum of 36 semester hours annually.
  • Certification as a Florida Firefighter or eligibility for certification.
  • Minimum of ten years of proven work experience as a firefighter.
  • Level III Fire Service Instructor certification from the State of Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training, or eligibility for certification.
  • A proven track record of effective instruction in Fire Science with the ability to utilize contemporary technology.
  • Ability to function in an occupationally oriented program requiring regular interaction with students and fire service agencies.
  • Willingness to apply technology and innovative approaches to teaching Fire Science.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods, present verbal lectures and demonstrations, walk, bend, lift, reach, stoop, and occasionally carry items in excess of twenty-five pounds.
  • Ability to operate standard office machines and other necessary equipment while following proper safety standards.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare a syllabus for each lecture and lab course.
  • Grade quizzes, tests, and written assignments and enter grades in the Canvas gradebook in a timely manner.
  • Assign final grades.
  • Develop and maintain course management and internet shells.
  • Instruct assigned classes and laboratories.
  • Participate in developing retention and core completion strategies.
  • Develop and maintain course management through the college's learning management system.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students.
  • Cooperate in department budget preparation and course planning and development.
  • Assist with departmental projects and programs, including undergraduate research efforts.
  • Serve on at least one college committee or workgroup.
  • Develop and implement strategies to support student retention, persistence, and program completion.
  • Complete other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Teach Fire Science courses, develop and deliver curriculum, mentor students, foster an interactive learning environment, collaborate on program development and departmental projects, and maintain partnerships with the fire service community.
