Requirements
  • A baccalaureate degree in Occupational Therapy from a recognized university.
  • Registration with the College of Occupational Therapy of British Columbia.
  • Eligibility for membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapy.
  • A minimum of two years of recent experience in a long-term care setting.
  • Knowledge of the use, care, and maintenance of related equipment.
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff.
  • Ability to plan and provide education and instruction to adults.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the role.
  • Ability and willingness to successfully undergo applicable screening and background checks, including the Salvation Army Abuse Registry, and provide an original background check screening copy.
Responsibilities
  • Assess the habilitation needs of residents, including cognitive function, and develop individualized plans using recognized occupational therapy techniques and activity modalities.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate ongoing individual and group occupational therapy intervention programs based on residents’ physical, functional, cognitive, and social needs.
  • Collaborate with the Resident Care Team and families to formulate individualized rehabilitation, maintenance, or palliative care plans.
  • Complete annual cognitive screens and additional screens as required for residents living with dementia.
  • Maintain clinical records of assessments, treatments, progress, and changes in residents’ conditions or treatments, and report progress in team meetings and through PointClickCare.
  • Provide general instruction to staff on musculoskeletal injury prevention and body mechanics, and detailed instruction to direct care staff on lifts, transfers, and positioning.
  • Provide ergonomic assessments for staff as requested.
  • Orient care staff and volunteers on lifting techniques and meal assistance.
  • Monitor occupational therapy equipment and supplies, coordinate requisitioning and repair or maintenance, and identify equipment needs for capital budget planning.
  • Participate in occupational therapy quality monitoring and improvement activities, including implementing and evaluating programs, activities, goals, objectives, standards, procedures, principal function statements, and performance indicators.
  • Participate in committees including Occupational Health and Safety, Ethics, Quality Improvement, and Care Conferences as needed.
  • Maintain statistics and report regularly on the Occupational Therapy program and related concerns.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment by reporting unsafe conditions and suspected resident abuse, reducing or eliminating recognized safety risks, and documenting incidents according to established procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
