Requirements
  • An Associate's degree and 3 years of relevant experience are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • The role requires detailed understanding and application of payer contracts.
  • The role requires knowledge of billing applications, payer systems, and clearinghouse systems.
  • The role requires the ability to resolve complex claims involving coordination of benefits, eligibility issues, authorizations, third-party audits, and multiple-provider reimbursement allocation.
Responsibilities
  • Perform follow-up activities to bring open accounts receivable to closure and maximize revenue collection.
  • Research, correct, and resubmit claims; submit appeals; and take timely action to resolve unpaid claims.
  • Determine effective follow-up methods for disputed, unpaid, underpaid, and overpaid insurance or contracted-service accounts.
  • Review electronic medical records, contact agencies, payers, and departments, and take corrective action to resolve account problems.
  • Analyze accounts and apply payer contracts to determine correct revenue proration and reimbursement.
  • Write appeals with appropriate content and supporting documentation and determine when resubmission efforts are complete.
  • Research and respond to clinical department inquiries regarding complex, high-dollar, and specialized accounts.
  • Resolve claim issues involving coordination of benefits, eligibility, authorizations, retroactive approvals, refunds, and secondary billing.
  • Determine allocation of reimbursement for global transplant payments and initiate money transfers to applicable payers.
  • Prepare for and attend meetings and phone conferences with third-party insurance representatives about complex claims and system issues.
  • Identify issues requiring management intervention, recommend formal complaints to the state's regulatory commission or agency, and change accounts to self-pay when appropriate.
  • Research and suggest improvements to processes and training materials, provide coverage for other positions, perform administrative office tasks, and maintain records.
  • Train new staff on billing applications, payer systems, and clearinghouse systems.
  • Provide feedback to leadership on training results and input for performance assessments based on observations, questions, and quality reviews.
  • Act as an area leader when needed and respond to payers, patients, and issues referred by hospital departments.
