Coincidentally, the company is mulling listing some of Solidigm's shares on NASDAQ to raise capital, but to retain control over its North America-based subsidiary, according to The Korea Herald. Go deeper with TH Premium: Memory After SK hynix acquired Intel's 3D NAND and SSD business in 2021 and formed its Solidigm subsidiary shortly after, it suspended any expansions of Solidigm's capacity in China partly due to the memory market downturn in 2022 - 2023 and partly due to U.S. export controls that curb exports of advanced fab tools to China. However, as demand for solid-state storage is setting records in general and demand for Solidigm's high-capacity SSDs is exceptionally strong, SK hynix is reconsidering its capacity plans for the Dalian fab just in time for Solidigm's initial public offering. Following a four-year pause, Solidigm has reportedly resumed investment in its Dalian facility in China this year. The company has completed construction of the second phase of the fab and is preparing to start installing production equipment as early as November, the report claims. The facility is expected to begin mass production of floating gate 3D NAND flash in the first half of 2027, if the report is accurate. Combined with approximately 100,000 WSPM at the existing first phase of the facility, the new phase would boost Solidigm's NAND production capacity in Dalian by roughly 50%, to around 150,000 WSPM. Late last year, the U.S. government granted SK hynix and Samsung annual licenses to ship semiconductor production equipment that contains technologies developed in America to their Chinese fabs through 2026, which replaced their previous open-ended Validated End User (VEU) exemptions. As a result, both companies can now upgrade their fabs in the People's Republic and even use new process technologies there. Solidigm, for example, intends to start making floating gate 3D QLC NAND memory with over 200 active layers at its Dalian facility in the second half of 2026, which was made possible by the timely tool upgrades. The additional capacity will further increase bit output of the Dalian campus, which in turn will enable Solidigm to produce its 245TB-class SSDs due to be introduced in the coming months in decent quantities, sometimes in 2027. Solidigm, which controls roughly a quarter of the data center-grade SSD market, is a crown jewel in SK hynix's portfolio as it makes unique products that are sold at a premium and are in high demand. Listing Solidigm on NASDAQ would enable SK hynix to gain capital (up to $7 billion, if unofficial reports are correct), but retain control over the precious asset. The money that SK hynix will raise should be roughly enough to expand Solidigm's capacity and increase output of premium data center-grade solid-state drives. This fab is owned and operated by its NAND subsidiary, Solidigm, which is finally resuming expansion in mainland China after a four-year project freeze. In 2021, when SK hynix acquired Intel's 3D NAND and SSD business, it formed Solidigm to focus on this area of production. However, export controls and a downturn in the NAND Flash market halted any expansion plans that Solidigm and SK hynix had in China, effectively stopping strategic planning from the headquarters. Inventory levels at major suppliers fell to historic lows in Q1, while production output lagged far behind order growth. Vendors are aggressively raising prices to maximize profitability amid tight supply, driving enterprise SSD contract prices up by approximately 80% during the quarter. Samsung rode shipments of 176-layer QLC products to generate $7.05 billion in enterprise SSD revenue during the quarter - a 92.8% QoQ increase - while migrating its product portfolio to 236-layer NAND. SK Hynix/Solidigm had Q1 enterprise SSD revenues of $4.64 billion with expanded deliveries of 176-layer TLC parts. solutions. Solidigm, a pioneer in enterprise data storage, announced new co-chief executive officers, Xin Guo and Richard Chin. Guo, named co-CEO in March, drives Solidigm's global business strategy and execution across technology and engineering to deliver market-leading innovation. Chin assumed his role on May 1 and is focused on accelerating Solidigm's performance and expanding its capabilities, sharpening business processes, and advancing the company's growth trajectory. "AI is fueling exponential data growth everywhere, elevating the importance of storage choices," said Guo. "Solidigm is experiencing strong growth as an enterprise storage leader for AI infrastructure, and Richard and I are thrilled to work with Team Solidigm to help propel the company to the next level of innovation and growth." Guo previously served as acting co-CEO and Head of Data Center Engineering for Solidigm. His career spans key leadership roles advancing NAND flash and SSD systems at Intel, Numonyx, and Spansion. Guo holds 40 US patents and earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Yale University, with earlier degrees from Tsinghua University. Chin brings to Solidigm extensive SK Group experience where, among other roles, he started SK's first venture capital operation for SK Telecom, led commercial integration of Hynix Semiconductors into SK, and served as Chief Sales and Marketing officer for SK hynix. Chin earned a bachelor's in economics from the University of Chicago and a J.D. at John Marshall Law School.
