Requirements
  • Extensive experience designing, implementing, and managing security architecture for large, complex organisations, including deep expertise in defence in depth, zero trust, least privilege, and secure by design approaches.
  • Strong risk and assurance capability, including conducting risk assessments and threat modelling, developing risk management strategies, and leading internal and external security audits, assessments, and penetration testing aligned to frameworks such as CAF and NIST.
  • Proven experience in security governance and continuous improvement, including developing and maintaining security policies, standards, and procedures and applying current knowledge of emerging threats, vulnerabilities, and trends.
  • Experience designing and implementing secure network architectures, including network protocols, segmentation, firewalls, virtual private networks, and intrusion detection and prevention systems in on-premise and cloud environments.
  • Experience with security technologies and tools including identity and access management, security information and event management tools, endpoint protection, cryptography and encryption solutions, data protection and privacy controls, vulnerability management, security orchestration automation and response tools, secure mobile and endpoint computing, and securing web applications, application programming interfaces, and microservices.
  • Degree-level education or significant professional experience.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive security architecture framework aligned with the IT strategy, government policies, and best practices.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain security policies, standards, and procedures in line with government regulations, industry standards, and departmental needs.
  • Ensure that IT systems and solutions comply with relevant legal, regulatory, and governmental standards, including the General Data Protection Regulation, Cyber Essentials, and Secure by Design.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate security into all aspects of the Agency’s digital transformation initiatives.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in technical architecture and bring forward recommendations for improvement.
  • Design, build, and maintain robust security architectures that protect IT infrastructure and sensitive data from threats and vulnerabilities.
  • Work with business leaders, IT teams, and external partners to develop and implement security strategies aligned with departmental objectives and regulatory requirements.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with UK public sector regulations, standards, and frameworks, including the Government Digital Service, Secure by Design, Cyber Essentials, National Cyber Security Centre guidelines, General Data Protection Regulation, and ISO/IEC 27001.
  • A security qualification such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional or SABSA.

MIT fusion pioneer Dennis Whyte appointed CEO of UK Atomic Energy Authority

Professor Dennis Whyte has been appointed CEO of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority Group, taking up the role this autumn. Whyte is a co-founder of Rutherford Energy Ventures, a professor at MIT, former director of the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center, and co-founder of Commonwealth Fusion Systems. He will oversee UKAEA's fusion research and development, advance commercial pathways, and strengthen international partnerships as the UK works to commercialise fusion energy technologies. Whyte's pioneering work on high-temperature superconducting magnet technology transformed the commercial outlook for magnetic confinement fusion by enabling smaller, more efficient machine designs. "The world is entering a period of unprecedented energy demand," said Whyte. "Achieving commercial fusion will require coordinated efforts across governments, industry, investors, and the scientific community.

Cornish Lithium secures $9.1M UK government grant for drilling and DLE testing

Cornish Lithium has secured £7.2 million in grant funding from the UK Government's DRIVE35 programme. The grant will part-fund a £14.5 million drilling and testing programme. The funding will enable the company to drill two 2,000-metre production wells and operate a Direct Lithium Extraction demonstration plant at Cross Lanes. It will also support an appraisal well at the nearby Baldhu site to confirm additional lithium resources. The programme aims to advance assessment of technical and economic viability for commercial production at the Cross Lanes Geothermal Lithium Project near Truro. The activities will provide technical information to evaluate the project's potential for commercial lithium production. The project aligns with the UK Government's Industrial Strategy and Critical Minerals Strategy.

Calyo wins $1.6M UK grant for 3D ultrasound perception system for autonomous vehicles

Calyo has secured £1.25 million in UK government grant funding through the CAM Pathfinder Demonstrate competition. The Bristol-based deep-tech company is leading DRIVEN BY SOUND+, an 18-month project developing all-weather perception technology for automated vehicles. Working with Benedex and Cranfield University, Calyo will integrate its 3D ultrasound technology with AI computing and vehicle control systems. The Calyo Pulse platform uses ultrasound to generate detailed environmental data, designed to complement cameras, LiDAR and radar in challenging conditions including rain, fog and low light. The project builds on earlier work and aims to deliver an integrated perception subsystem validated at TRL 6-7. The technology has potential applications beyond passenger vehicles, including commercial transport and mobile robotics where robust near-range perception is critical.
