  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required for employees hired on or after June 1, 2017.
  • Ability to successfully complete the organization's competency requirements for English, writing, spelling, and reading comprehension.
  • Ability to successfully complete the hospital's orientation, core orientation, and unit-specific orientation.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Organizational skills to maintain records and orderly filing systems and manage multiple processes simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and all members of the care delivery team.
  • Ability to perform work involving prolonged computer or cathode-ray tube use, close visual tolerances, and sustained hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to stand or walk considerably, lift light objects weighing 20 pounds or less, assist with heavier patient-lifting tasks, and perform required fatiguing positions and motions.
  • Safe patient handling knowledge and ability to use proper body positioning, body mechanics, safe work practices, patient transfer or lifting devices, and personal protective equipment when necessary for Patient Safety Assistant duties.
  • Ability to observe and report patient activities and behaviors, respond appropriately to maintain patient safety, communicate with patients, patient families, and healthcare providers, and maintain confidentiality and safety procedures for Patient Safety Assistant duties.
  • Ability to assist with patient turns and transfers to a commode or bathroom when functioning as a Patient Safety Assistant.
Responsibilities
  • Perform clerical and receptionist functions for the unit under the supervision of Unit Leadership.
  • Prepare and compile records on the nursing unit.
  • Coordinate unit communication systems, including telephones, the nurse call system, and hospital information systems.
  • Relay information and maintain appropriate public relations with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Assist with maintaining supplies, equipment, and the overall unit environment.
  • Coordinate the flow of information throughout the unit or department for all staff.
  • Answer telephone and nurse call system inquiries and provide information or relay messages to patients, visitors, and medical staff.
  • Direct visitors to patients' rooms or visitor waiting areas.
  • Distribute mail, newspapers, and flowers to patients.
  • Compile patient census, maintain records, and distribute information according to unit or department procedures.
  • Coordinate with the charge nurse to ensure smooth, efficient, and timely patient flow into, through, and out of the department.
  • Perform clerical duties and process equipment and staff requests related to department needs.
  • Record patient name, address, and attending physician name to prepare medical records for new patients.
  • Maintain patient medical-record files for the unit.
  • Monitor and requisition supplies designated by nursing staff, and organize and store supplies according to unit or department procedures.
  • Gather, input, and retrieve information in various computerized systems.
  • Transport patients and guests to locations within the facility as directed or needed.
  • Stock supplies to facilitate patient care in the assigned unit.
  • Take admission paperwork to patient rooms and facilitate and complete Medicare, Important Message, and other paperwork as directed by the registered nurse.
  • Manage incoming tubes from the tube station and deliver medications or other items to the registered nurse or medication cart.
  • Work with transport personnel to monitor elevator bays for beds and carts.
  • Assist in monitoring the Environment of Care.
  • Perform assigned patient and family support duties, such as passing water and obtaining towels.
  • Maintain unsupervised access to unit medication rooms for stocking or retrieving supplies.
  • Hold and cuddle stable newborn infants under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse in OB Mother/Baby and Antepartum units.
  • Function as a Patient Safety Assistant for suicide precautions at Bronson Methodist Hospital when assigned, including observing and preventing unsafe patient behavior or activity, communicating patient status and pertinent information to the responsible registered nurse, occasionally accompanying patients for diagnostic tests, and maintaining a clean and orderly environment.
  • Maintain appropriate observation and prevention of unsafe patient behavior or activity during Patient Safety Assistant assignments.
  • Accompany patients for diagnostic tests occasionally during Patient Safety Assistant assignments.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly environment during Patient Safety Assistant assignments.
Desired Qualifications
  • One to three months of related experience and/or training.
  • Previous healthcare experience.
