Research reveals how criminal gangs are using AI to improve financial scams.

Research reveals how criminal gangs are using AI to improve financial scams. TD Bank's adversary intelligence lead Eric Huber showed original research on the translation engines, reply generators and victim CRMs running inside Southeast Asian scam compounds at Black Hat USA 2026. Published on Aug 4, 2026 Las Vegas - Niche, specialized cyber-criminal groups are offering customizable off-the-shelf tools for scam gangs to use to make scams like pig-butchering more efficient and convincing, new research shows. Eric Huber, senior manager of adversary intelligence and disruption at TD Bank, gave a demonstration of AI-powered translation software, reply engines, and a full customer relationship management platform being used by criminal gangs, at Black Hat USA 2026. So called 'pig-butchering' scams are among the fastest growing fraud targeting Americans. In these schemes, scammers build relationships with individuals over time before convincing them to make fake investments. These scams cost Americans at least $7.2 billion in 2025, figures that are believed to significantly underrepresent actual losses as many victims do not report to law enforcement. The scam compounds themselves, in countries like Cambodia and Myanmar, hold thousands of trafficked workers in what Huber described as slave labour supporting a billion-dollar industry. Huber emphasized that the tools do not automate attacks, but "help some poor person do the scamming by creating responses that are going to be the most effective." For example, workers in the compounds, who may only speak one or two languages, are given AI translation software that automatically translates. One app, Editone, lets an operator load a victim's profile and a fabricated persona to make the replies more convincing, with voice cloning built in. The capabilities of AI image and voice cloning tools have become far more sophisticated over the last couple of years, including the ability to add fake meta-data into images, Huber demonstrated. Another app functions as a customer relationship management system for scam victims, which tracks stages of fraud and sets daily contact targets, with punishment for workers who miss them. Using AI against large retailers Not all of the AI tools targets individuals. Huber also demonstrated refund-fraud crimeware aimed at retailers, including Amazon. Operators open ordinary retail accounts and "warm" them with a period of normal browsing to make them look established. They then conduct refund fraud attacks, buying goods, returning them, and keeping both the item and the refund. Huber maintains fraudsterglossary.com, a public glossary of fraud terminology in English and Chinese drawn from his years monitoring criminal Telegram channels. Top stories. Cyber weekly. How TD Bank removed barriers to family building care.

How TD Bank removed barriers to family building care. TD Bank believes benefits should work for employees - not the other way around. When the organization evaluated its fertility benefit nearly a decade ago, leaders recognized employees were facing unnecessary hurdles before they could even access care. TD Bank partnered with Progyny to modernize this navigation and create a more inclusive approach centered on access, flexibility, and personalized support. "Progyny is the perfect benefit to align to the TD Bank way. It really exemplifies the individuality of every one of our colleagues and how we want to support them wherever they are."

Latest Charlotte bank expansion includes new branches and more corporate space.

Latest Charlotte bank expansion includes new branches and more corporate space. July 31, 2026 5:15 AM Gift Article TD Bank is adding more choices for customers in the Charlotte region with new branch locations. The financial institution which began expanding its footprint in the region a few years ago, is planning to open branches in the Berewick neighborhood of southwest Charlotte at 9424 Steele Creek Road and at 8830 Lindholm Drive in Huntersville. For approval, the bank recently submitted filings with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, an independent bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. TD currently has eight branches in the Charlotte area, and the new sites will bring that total to 10. Four of its Charlotte locations are TD community-centered storefronts. Those types of branches offer financial literacy programs and resources to residents. The bank said the proposed stores are part of its plan to expand in fast-growing markets and update its branch network to better match how customers bank today. The company headquartered in Toronto is one of a number of banks trying to grow in a market dominated by the region's Big Three banks - Bank of America, Truist and Wells Fargo. Some of the other competitors include PNC, JPMorgan Chase and Huntington Bank. TD Bank expands its Carolinas footprint. In 2022, TD Bank announced plans to open more than a dozen locations in the area by 2025, The Charlotte Observer previously reported. Former TD Bank CEO Leo Salom said Charlotte's economic and population growth helped draw the institution to the region. At the time, TD Bank noted that at least 25% of the new branches in the city would be located in majority-minority or low-to-moderate-income areas. In October, TD Bank announced plans to expand its corporate presence in Charlotte by signing a new 10-year lease with Northwood Office in Ballantyne. Northwood Office is part of Northwood Investors, which owns Ballantyne Corporate Park. TD Bank is planning to move this summer or early fall. TD Bank currently leases space from Northwood in the Irby Building at 11325 N. Community House Road. That 18,500-square-foot space houses more than 100 employees. The new location at 13024 Ballantyne Corporate Place has capacity for 540 people. TD will occupy three floors spanning more than 91,000 square feet, along with an additional suite on the ground level. TD Bank is also planning to open a new branch in the Midtown area of Raleigh at 407 E. Six Forks Road. There are currently 16 branches open across North Carolina. TD Bank employs 1,500 people across North Carolina, including 1,050 workers in the Charlotte area. Current TD Bank branches in the Charlotte region: * 345 S. Kings Drive, Charlotte * 2020 Beatties Ford Road, Suite 300, Charlotte * 3310 Wilkinson Blvd., Charlotte * 3061 N. Sharon Amity Road, Suite 5, Charlotte * 6611 Carmel Road, Charlotte * 100 Stone Village Drive, Fort Mill, South Carolina * 8179 Charlotte Highway, Indian Land, South Carolina * 331 E. DIVERSEcity and TD Bank renew partnership to support local, diverse entrepreneurs build businesses.

DIVERSEcity and TD Bank renew partnership to support local, diverse entrepreneurs build businesses. July 22, 2026 Entrepreneurship in action! Business incubator helps emerging entrepreneurs plan, launch and grow their ideas. British Columbia leads Canada in small business, with small enterprises making up 98% of all businesses in the province, boosting the province's GDP and economy. And the diversity of entrepreneurs is expansive, with women, immigrant, youth, BIPOC and other emerging entrepreneurs taking the entrepreneurial leap. Yet the business landscape can be a tough place for them to navigate, and a great idea doesn't mean automatic success. That's where empowering entrepreneurship programs, like the Diverse Entrepreneurs Business Incubator by DIVERSEcity and supported by TD Bank, come in. The Diverse Entrepreneurs Business Incubator is a free, 24+ week self-employment training program, networking hub and business incubation platform rolled into one. "With a constrained employment market and high cost of living, it's not surprising to see so many British Columbians want to turn to self-employment, whether it's their full-time gig or a side hustle to make extra income," said Florence Kao, Manager of DIVERSEcity's Business Incubator. "We are proudly supporting emerging, local entrepreneurs, particularly those from equity-deserving populations, to put their entrepreneurship ideas into action." And DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society is so grateful to TD Bank for supporting its ability to continue doing so. Together, DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society is here to provide these entrepreneurs with the guidance, mentorship and business planning basics to start up their businesses with success." TD Bank came on as the program partner in 2024, as well as previous years, and has renewed its support with additional funding of $425,000 for the next two years. DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society gathered on July 22, 2026, to celebrate with a cheque presentation with TD representatives Amyn Jessa, District Vice President; Sarbjit K. Johal, Area Manager, Small Business; Natasha Srisky, Branch Manager; and Jyoti Banga, Manager, Community Engagement. With TD's renewal of support, applications to join the program are open! "DIVERSEcity and TD have had a long history with supporting entrepreneurship and small business growth," says Vandna Joshi, Director, Language, Employment & Social Entrepreneurship. "Thank you to TD for renewing your commitment for another two years; we couldn't support these incredibly creative, brave and diverse British Columbians without your help." Helping emerging entrepreneurs in BC start their business. Since 2024, the program has supported 106 emerging entrepreneurs with 71 businesses launched. Further, 87 have indicated they have improved their entrepreneurial skills and 77 have improved their confidence and self-efficacy. The predominant business ideas revolve around retail trade (15%) and food services (13%), while others delve into finance, insurance, health care, social assistance, and professional, scientific and technical services. Participants Asiya and Zahra, founders of Its Village, have used the tools learned in the program to create a growing, healing community and retail business for mothers. They share: "The DIVERSEcity Business Incubator program has been such an amazing experience for Our Village. Getting the chance to present at events like the Dragons' Den-style competition really boosted our confidence in pitching our business and gave us valuable feedback from both peers and experts. The weekly classes have been so practical and helpful, guiding us through everything from marketing and financial planning to making sure our business is sustainable in the long run." Entrepreneur & Small Business Fair is coming up during Small Business week. Program participants will also get an opportunity to showcase their businesses and take part in a business pitch competition at the 10th annual DIVERSEcity Entrepreneur & Small Business Fair on October 22, 2026, in Surrey, BC, presented by TD Bank. Learn more about the entrepreneur fair here. "Supporting entrepreneurs to succeed means a more resilient small business sector, helping to build a stronger province and Canada for everyone," adds Vandna Joshi.
