  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • For Title I schools, meet the employment requirements outlined by the Every Student Succeeds Act and have either six documented semester hours of coursework in early childhood education or two years of work experience in an early childhood setting.
  • Maintain Crisis Prevention and Intervention certification through the proper renewal process; training is provided by the school system if needed.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and Google Apps.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of instructional delivery methods and general classroom activities and routines.
  • Protect the confidentiality of personally identifiable information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and applicable laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Monitor and supervise the safety and well-being of students.
  • Recognize and support students with varied backgrounds, abilities, exceptionalities, behavioral needs, and learning styles.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written form using varied communication techniques and tools.
  • Work effectively with school system staff, students, parents, businesses, community agencies, and the public.
  • Work Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends, for no more than 40 hours per week.
  • Perform medium physical work, including exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.
  • Provide physical assistance such as lifting, positioning, or transferring students and support special health care needs as assigned.
Responsibilities
  • Support and assist teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students, including implementing students’ Individualized Education Plans.
  • Maintain an encouraging, caring, safe, and healthful classroom environment.
  • Assist teachers with strategies for implementing students’ behavioral intervention plans.
  • Assist with planning and organizing instructional activities, evaluating activities, developing classroom procedures, and preparing lesson materials.
  • Provide in-class support while promoting students’ progress toward independence and self-determination.
  • Assist teachers with low- and high-tech assistive technology and augmentative communication devices to address class-wide and individual student needs.
  • Compile, maintain, and file reports, records, and other required documents while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participate in district staff development and continued professional growth.
  • Coordinate, assist with, and facilitate student transitions between classes.
  • Provide special health care support, including personal hygiene, restroom functions, diapering, mobility assistance, seizure-control activities, and feeding needs.
  • Support students’ adaptive equipment needs, including wheelchairs, crutches, prosthetic devices, orthotic devices, hearing aids, braille, assistive listening devices, and augmentative and alternative communication devices.
  • Use behavioral assistance and Crisis Prevention and Intervention skills.
  • For SATA assignments, serve as a one-on-one instructional assistant for a student with severe to profound learning disabilities.
  • Attend and successfully complete specialized training determined by the student’s Individualized Education Plan.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Experience working with or assisting individuals with special needs, including physical, emotional, behavioral, or learning disabilities or impairments requiring specialized services or accommodations.
