Requirements
  • A Bachelor's or Associate's Degree in Dental Hygiene is required.
  • Current licensure as a Dental Hygienist in the State of New Mexico is required.
  • New Mexico Board certification as a Registered Dental Hygienist is required.
  • Anesthesia license with board certification is required.
  • CPR certification is required within six months of hire.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional regulations and guidelines for dental outpatient services is required.
  • Knowledge of patient screening, charting, medical history procedures, and documentation is required.
  • Ability to independently assess dental, periodontal, and associated conditions and pathology in dental outpatients is required.
  • Ability to perform the full range of established dental hygienist protocols and procedures is required.
  • Ability to analyze medical records and prescribed protocols to formulate effective therapeutic treatment plans is required.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel is required.
  • Ability to set up and prepare dental equipment and instruments according to established regulations and guidelines is required.
  • Knowledge of dental surgery, associated procedures, terminology, and techniques is required.
  • Ability to independently perform emergency dental procedures is required.
  • Knowledge of patient admission, triage, transfer, and discharge procedures and documentation is required.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and compliance programs is required.
  • Good dexterity with dental instruments, laboratory equipment, personal computers, and electronic dental records is required.
  • Ability to stand for long periods, walk, use hands and arms, and lift or move objects up to 25 pounds is required.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately for work and safety compliance is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assess patients' dental conditions and needs using medical history review, dental charting, periodontal charting, and vital-sign procedures.
  • Deliver direct dental hygiene care, including cleaning, polishing, exposing and developing X-rays, patient education, and applying sealants and fluoride.
  • Develop and implement individualized dental care plans, discharge planning, and patient and family education under dentist supervision.
  • Provide chair-side assistance to dentists during special tests, procedures, and complex treatments.
  • Take impressions of patients' teeth for study casts.
  • Document dental histories and chief complaints, record and report patient observations and reactions, document laboratory procedures, and follow up on results.
  • Assist with or initiate emergency measures for sudden adverse developments during patient treatment.
  • Triage walk-in and emergency patients and initiate or coordinate appropriate care for the dentist.
  • Assist with patient-area preparation and patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
  • Prepare reports and assist with reception, telephone calls, routine triage, and other office duties as needed.
  • Scrub instruments and prepare them for autoclaving.
  • Sanitize and disinfect operatories, sharpen instruments, and restock required materials, instruments, and supplies.
  • Write prescriptions for dentist endorsement and call them into the pharmacy.
  • Participate in site and organizational quality assurance and improvement activities.
  • Perform other miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of experience in a clinic or community health setting is preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish ability is preferred.
