Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience is required.
  • At least 3 years of related work experience is required, or an equivalent combination of professional training, certifications, and work experience.
  • A bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related field is required, or an equivalent combination of professional training, certifications, and work experience.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced setting while handling multiple assignments with diverse clients in various academic research areas.
  • Ability to use database applications, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Teams.
  • Sufficient mobility, dexterity, and endurance to perform emergency response activities and field visits.
  • Ability to use personal protective equipment and monitoring equipment and access any University area for inspections, job safety assessments, and emergency response.
  • Ability to participate in emergency response on a rotating basis and respond to emergencies during non-business hours.
  • Ability to participate on-site during off hours, holidays, and weekends when required to support projects.
Responsibilities
  • Provide technical and field support to the Environmental Health and Safety Biosafety Team.
  • Assist with implementing programs and services for biohazardous materials and recombinant and synthetic nucleic acids within Harvard schools.
  • Act as a customer liaison between university clients, including laboratory principal investigators and research staff, Facilities Management, and Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Facilitate the integration of biosafety into laboratory operations and promote safe work practices based on regulatory requirements, best management practices, and University Policy.
  • Develop and maintain proficiency in regulations, standards, guidelines, and trends in biological safety and environmental health and safety, and communicate requirements to colleagues and university laboratory customers.
  • Collaborate with Lab Safety Advisors and Biosafety Team members to perform inspections, compliance reviews, and hazard assessments of research laboratories, research animal facilities, and other support facilities.
  • Author peer-reviewed compliance reports and monitor corrective actions.
  • Conduct risk assessments of biological research protocols, process applications for registration with the Harvard Institutional Biosafety Committee, and participate in committee meetings.
  • Deliver and assist in developing safety training covering biological, general, and physical hazard protection in laboratories, safety and exposure-control practices, hazardous-materials shipping, and customized topics.
  • Update and contribute to drafting policies, guidelines, and procedures for the University's Biological Safety Program, including BL1 through BL3.
  • Assist with responding to and investigating laboratory-related accidents or exposures.
  • Support preparation for and assist with regulatory site visits.
  • Assist with additional Environmental Health and Safety projects and program work as needed.
  • Participate in the Environmental Health and Safety Emergency Response Team on a rotating basis.
  • Carry a mobile phone and respond to emergencies during non-business hours with other Environmental Health and Safety staff.
