Requirements
  • A high school diploma and three years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment or field, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • A valid Arizona driver's license, minimum Class D, must be possessed upon employment and maintained throughout employment.
  • An acceptable driving record with five or fewer points during the most recent 39-month period is required after an offer of employment.
  • Successful completion of a post-offer pre-employment physical examination, including asbestos worker clearance, a respiratory clearance questionnaire, and a respiratory fit test.
  • Ability to work in dirty environments, inadequate lighting, extreme noise and temperatures, confined spaces, restricted movement, and around hazardous materials.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, face shield, respirator, gloves, and hearing protection; medical clearance may be required for respirator use.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work from ladders using hand and power tools, work from boom or crane trucks above six feet, lift and carry up to 75 pounds, push or pull a loaded maintenance cart, and drive a university vehicle or cart.
  • Current eligibility to legally work in the United States; the employer will not sponsor this position.
  • Availability for a rotating on-call or stand-by schedule and emergency response, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
Responsibilities
  • Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems, including complex and precision work on utility piping systems.
  • Locate, repair, and replace malfunctioning parts using hand tools and power tools.
  • Inspect mechanical system components and use soldering and brazing tools for precision design, layout, fabrication, joining, and repair of metals, piping, and pressure vessels.
  • Work with drawings and specifications.
  • Install and maintain steam supply and condensate return lines, steam traps, and pressure-reducing valves.
  • Install and maintain chilled-water supply and return lines.
  • Install and repair domestic water lines and drain lines.
  • Install and maintain reverse-osmosis supply and return lines.
  • Use the TMA work-order system to respond to maintenance requests.
  • Prioritize work based on a critical-needs assessment.
  • Assist other trades as needed.
  • Travel throughout campus to various research buildings as needed.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • Four years of plumbing and/or mechanical pipefitting systems experience, or completion of a four-year federally approved technical training program in plumbing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience studying plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirements and the sequence of repairs or replacements.
  • Knowledge of welding standards defined by current trade practice, including American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Society for Testing and Materials standards.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical operation of pumps, boilers, cooling towers, and chillers.
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials common to the plumbing and welding trades.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes.
  • Knowledge of the TMA work-order system.
  • Experience installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing and utility piping systems.
