Hypersonica GmbH develops hypersonic technology for aerospace and defense in Europe, aiming for speeds of Mach 5 and above. Its focus is on hypersonic vehicles that require advanced propulsion, heat-resistant materials, and complex aerodynamics, developed in stealth mode for dual-use government and future civil high-speed transport. The company is backed by investors including General Catalyst, 201 Ventures, ESA BIC, and TUM Venture Labs, with involvement in European accelerator networks for early-stage support. Its goal is to strengthen Europe’s resilience and space sovereignty by building private-sector hypersonic capabilities for defense and potential civilian high-speed applications.

What believers are saying

  • February 2026 testing validated systems through ascent, descent, and subcomponent performance.
  • Hypersonica targets full-scale flight tests in Q1 2026 and operational capability by 2029.
  • NATO demand for deep precision strike gives Hypersonica a ready defense budget pull.

What critics are saying

  • Hypersonic strike programs face export controls, range access, and government customer delays.
  • Competitors like MBDA and Roxel can outspend Hypersonica on follow-on tests.
  • A single failed flight before 2027 would crush credibility and capital access.

What makes Hypersonica unique

  • Hypersonica flew Mach 6 from Andøya Space on February 3, 2026.
  • It claims Europe’s first privately funded hypersonic missile flight.
  • Plural, SPRIND, General Catalyst, and 201 Ventures back its 2026 roadmap.

Munich's Hypersonica raises €23.3M Series A, tests hypersonic missile at Mach 6

Munich-based hypersonic systems startup Hypersonica has emerged from stealth with a €23.3 million Series A funding round led by Plural and a successful test launch. Founded in December 2023, the company is developing Europe's first privately funded hypersonic strike capability. On 3 February, Hypersonica launched a missile prototype from Andøya Space in Norway, reaching speeds exceeding Mach 6 and a range over 300 kilometres. The company completed the vehicle's development in just nine months. The Series A round included participation from Germany's Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation, General Catalyst and 201 Ventures. Hypersonica aims to deliver an initial short-range hypersonic strike capability by 2027 and fully operational hypersonic glide vehicles by 2029, targeting NATO member states' defence requirements.
