Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) preferred; Registered nurse licensed by State Board of Nursing in the state of employment; License must be in good standing with the State Board of Nursing in the state of employment.
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification or required within thirty (30) days of date-of-hire; Bi-annual re-certification is required.
  • Formal training in management of the aggressive patient is required within sixty (60) days of date-of-hire; Annual re-certification is required.
  • May be required to hold a qualified medical professional (QMP) designation at the hospital’s discretion; must be deemed competent to serve as a QMP as outlined in the Medical Staff bylaws; designation is evaluated and potentially renewed at least annually.
  • For Hospital Child/Adolescent Day Treatment programs licensed under HFS §40, employees must have either training in psychiatric nursing, including training in work with children with mental health disorders, or one (1) year of experience working in a clinical setting with these children.
Responsibilities
  • Complete initial assessments and documents as required; collect, record, and analyze, within prescribed timeframe, pertinent data for admission assessment according to Hospital policy; identify patient strengths and limitations; consider cultural, spiritual, and ethnic factors; identify discharge needs; assess medical/physical status; review history of medication compliance, reactions, and current schedule; collect age-specific data.
  • Involve patient’s support systems (family, friends) in assessment and documentation; observe and document patient’s interaction; obtain assessment data from support systems when appropriate.
  • Act as an advocate for patients; explain patient rights and obtain signatures on consents; protect patient privacy and confidentiality; assist in patient orientation; follow hospital policies on unit safety and searches; communicate sensitively with patient/family.
  • Initiate and update treatment plan and documentation; participate in planning and modifying plan of care; evaluate data and multidisciplinary assessments; participate in care conferences; develop and interpret plan of care with patient/family; write clear, obtainable treatment goals; review plan as goals are achieved or updated.
  • Identify, interpret, and document information from nursing interviews, observations, physical assessments, diagnostic data; confer with other health care professionals; review current lab data; follow up with doctor; assess falls risk and initiate fall precautions; identify potential for self-abuse, suicidality, or assaultive behavior; develop age-appropriate interventions.
  • Implement patient care; demonstrate safe medication administration with right patient, right medication, right dose, right time, right route; maintain knowledge of meds and their effects; transcribe and implement physician orders; monitor adverse drug reactions and interactions; conduct and document patient education about medications; stay current on new pharmacologic products.
  • Identify potential patient care problems, abrupt changes, or impending instability and intervene; use de-escalation techniques; re-evaluate safety level; identify withdrawal or neurological signs; identify significant cardiac/respiratory symptoms requiring immediate intervention.
  • Identify health education needs and educate patient/family before discharge; implement age-appropriate teaching; document in patient record and treatment plan.
  • Organize patient care activities according to patient priorities and unit needs; implement care based on established plans and policies; ensure EMTALA compliance when requested and qualified; adhere to nursing and hospital standards; maintain safety and infection control.
  • Participate in continuing education and in-service programs; attend required in-services; participate in Performance Improvement program; report CE information to unit staff.
