Responsibilities
  • Own mechanical R&D for Fleetzero battery modules: From a clean-sheet concept through production-ready design.
  • Drive the full mechanical development lifecycle of battery module products, owning designs from initial concept and first-article prototypes through development testing and validation into high-volume manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with electrical, manufacturing, and systems engineering counterparts to deliver robust, producible hardware on aggressive schedules.
  • This is a hands-on role. You will be building and testing prototypes yourself, running experiments, and iterating quickly.
  • If you are the type of engineer who is equally comfortable at a CAD workstation and a build bench, this role is for you.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with battery systems, power electronics enclosures, or thermal management for high-energy-density products
  • Background in marine, defense, automotive, or industrial equipment markets
  • Familiarity with IP-rated enclosure design and sealing strategies
  • Experience with liquid cooling systems design and qualification

Fleetzero, a Houston-based marine technology company, has launched its autonomy stack for commercial and defence vessel operators. The system comprises OctoDrive autonomy software, OctoPod tele-operated command centre, and OctoBox mobile autonomy package for retrofitting existing vessels. The launch expands Fleetzero's portfolio beyond its battery and power systems into the autonomous vessel market. Built by US Navy veterans, OctoDrive features multi-sensor fusion, autonomous route planning and low-latency performance. The system enables operators to control vessels remotely from shore-based locations. OctoBox, roughly suitcase-sized, allows ship owners to add autonomous capability to existing fleets without complete overhauls. Fleetzero has demonstrated the technology to commercial and defence customers, with multiple vessels currently operational.

US trio to develop next-generation autonomous vessels. June 4, 2026, by Fatima Bahtić US marine technology developer Fleetzero has partnered with shipbuilder Thoma-Sea Marine Constructors and naval architecture and engineering firm Glosten to support the development and deployment of autonomous vessel solutions for commercial maritime, government and defense applications. The collaboration will combine Fleetzero's battery energy storage, propulsion and autonomy technologies with Thoma-Sea's shipbuilding capabilities and Glosten's vessel design and engineering expertise. As part of the effort, the companies are developing an autonomous diesel-electric vessel intended for operations in contested environments, long-endurance missions and supply delivery tasks. According to the firms, the vessel features a low-profile design aimed at reducing radar detectability and supporting long-range operations. The collaboration is intended to support US government priorities, the Department of War, MARAD, and Coast Guard, which are related to modular and open-system vessel architectures. The platform is being developed for a range of applications, including autonomous and remotely operated cargo transport, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, patrol operations and contested logistics. The companies also see potential applications in electrified harbor craft, tugboats and coastal vessels. They added that the platform is designed to improve operator safety and support compliance with domestic-content requirements, including the Jones Act and Buy American provisions. Fleetzero raises $43M to scale hybrid and electric ship propulsion systems

Fleetzero, a marine technology company building hybrid and electric propulsion systems for ships, has raised $43 million in Series A funding led by Obvious Ventures. Maersk Growth and 8090 Industries joined as new investors, alongside existing backers including Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Y Combinator. The Houston-based startup will use the capital to expand manufacturing of its Leviathan propulsion system, which can be retrofitted onto existing vessels or installed in new ships. The company has opened a new manufacturing and R&D facility with initial capacity of 300 MWh per year, planning to scale to three GWh annually over five years. Fleetzero's system aims to reduce total ownership costs through maintenance and fuel savings whilst enabling marine autonomy. The company positions electrification as an opportunity to revitalise US shipbuilding.
