Responsibilities
  • Lead the definition and integration of the holistic mission platform baseline, ensuring the system meets operational requirements across hardware, software, payloads, and mission operations.
  • Partner with Business Development and Product Management to define end-to-end technical roadmaps for spacecraft platform families.
  • Establish, document, and release standardized capability baselines for platforms, packaging integrated hardware, software, and operations solutions for Mission Lead Systems Engineers to inherit.
  • Act as the strategic integration peer to Spacecraft Platform flight software and ground software architects and Operations Managers; manage integrated end-to-end mission system requirements while partnering with domain authorities.
  • Execute system-level simulation and analysis, often integrated into verification and validation campaigns, to close resource budgets and ensure rolled-up system performance meets platform specifications.
  • Maintain situational awareness across avionics and subsystem roadmaps to ensure capabilities are delivered on timelines required by the operational platform baseline.
  • Own platform-level requirements, verification and validation, and performance baselines; partner with Mission Lead Systems Engineers on mission-specific tailoring versus platform inheritance.
  • Shape fault management architectures and operational concepts designed to reduce operator workload while meeting service-level agreement requirements.
  • Ensure the platform baseline closes the end-to-end space-to-ground data pipeline from onboard command and data handling, storage, and downlink prioritization through ground ingest, processing, and delivery.
  • Champion a platform/product-line-first mindset and drive trades on baseline capabilities versus mission-specific options.
  • Drive systems standardization across the Mission Foundry by creating reusable requirements, specifications, and standardized documentation for the spacecraft fleet.

The companies will each develop, launch and operate a microwave sounding instrument, with NOAA able to purchase the resulting data commercially. What are microwave sounders? Microwave sounders are satellite-based remote sensing tools designed to detect naturally occurring microwave emissions from molecules in the atmosphere. Data collected can be used to map atmospheric temperature, water vapor and pressure at different altitudes. Because microwave signals can pass through clouds, the instruments can gather observations when other sensors may be obstructed. How will NOAA use commercial partnerships? NOAA is using its other transaction authority to work with industry on developing future sources of weather data. The agency said the authority allows it to partner with companies to mature technology. The agency has also been working to bring public and private data sources into its forecasting environment. August 20, 2026 - 11:30 am Muon Space has raised $250m in a round backed by Google and Salesforce, according to their announcement. It is the largest cheque yet written to a company whose best-known product is a constellation that watches for wildfires. The rise had been visible for a while. Axios reported in June that the California company was gathering $250m in a round led by Eclipse, which puts roughly two months between the first report and the close. Google's involvement is the least surprising part. Muon builds and operates FireSat, the wildfire detection constellation developed with the Earth Fire Alliance and Google Research, and it deployed the first three operational satellites in that system in July. FireSat is designed to spot fires while they are still small, on the order of a classroom rather than a neighbourhood, and to revisit the same ground often enough that the detection is useful to the people who have to drive towards it. It is the same problem OroraTech is attacking from Munich with a smaller constellation. That is a harder engineering problem than it sounds, and it is the reason the constellation needs dozens of satellites rather than a handful. What Muon actually sells, though, is the factory. The company designs mission-specific constellations on a platform it calls Halo, and chief executive Jonny Dyer has described the goal as "the world's first automated, high-mix, high-volume constellation manufacturing system", which is a long way of saying it wants to make satellites the way other people make cars. The target is 500 spacecraft a year from a 130,000-square-foot facility in San Jose. To get the propulsion in-house, it bought Starlight Engines, a maker of zinc-fuelled Hall-effect thrusters, last year. The business has also drifted. Muon began as a climate and Earth observation company and has moved steadily towards defence work, which is where the money in small satellites has gone since 2024, and it is building the Víndler radio-frequency sensing constellation for Sierra Space. Before this round, the company had raised a $146m Series B, closed in stages between August 2024 and June 2025 and led in its final tranche by Congruent Ventures, with Activate Capital, Acme Capital, Costanoa Ventures, Radical Ventures, and ArcTern Ventures on the register. Part of that was a credit facility rather than equity. Neither Muon nor its investors have published terms for the new round. No valuation has been disclosed, the split between equity and debt is unknown, and the company has not said what Google and Salesforce are putting in or through which vehicles. The sector around it has been having a good year. Planet Labs reached its first profitable year on the back of a $900m backlog and defence contracts, and the European equivalents have been raising steadily against the same demand backdrop. The demand side remains the awkward part of the story. Building the satellites has become dramatically cheaper and faster, and the market for what they see has not expanded at the same rate, which is why so many Earth observation companies end up selling to defence ministries. Wildfire detection is one of the few applications with an obvious buyer and an obvious deadline. The Earth Fire Alliance is a non-profit; the constellation is meant to be built out over the next few years, and Muon has now been paid to make that happen faster. Salesforce is the most interesting name on the list. It has no obvious operational use for satellite imagery, which suggests the investment sits with its venture arm and the sustainability thesis rather than with any product roadmap. Corporate money of that kind has been unusually willing to fund Earth observation over the past two years, partly because the sector now has revenue and partly because climate-adjacent investments are easier to defend when the constellation is also detecting fires. Muon signed more than $100m of new contracts in 2024, on its own account, and grew its team by half in the six months to mid-2025. Neither figure has been updated publicly since.
