Pfizer is a global biopharmaceutical company that discovers, develops, manufactures, and sells medicines and vaccines for a range of health needs, including vaccines, oncology, and other specialized therapies. Its products work by using biological mechanisms to prevent or treat diseases—vaccines train the immune system to fight infections, while medicines target cancer and other conditions. Pfizer differentiates itself through its large worldwide footprint, broad portfolio across multiple therapeutic areas, and partnerships (notably with BioNTech) that expanded its reach in vaccines and cutting-edge therapies. The company also engages in public health initiatives, such as efforts to provide vaccines to underserved populations. Pfizer’s broad goal is to improve global health by delivering safe and effective medicines and vaccines through research, development, and wide international distribution.

Pfizer raises 2026 guidance to $62.5B, but boost relies on Eliquis facing patent expiry

Pfizer reported second-quarter revenue of $15 billion, up 3% year over year, and raised its 2026 revenue guidance to between $60.5 billion and $62.5 billion. However, investors showed limited enthusiasm. The pharmaceutical giant's anticoagulant Eliquis, shared with Bristol Myers Squibb, generated $2.4 billion in quarterly revenue, up 21% year over year. The drug is now Pfizer's best-selling product. The concern is that Eliquis will lose patent exclusivity by the end of the decade. Pfizer's increased reliance on a drug facing imminent generic competition may signal it has yet to identify a suitable replacement. The company is expanding its pipeline, particularly in the GLP-1 market, where its candidate berobenatide is undergoing phase 3 trials after posting strong phase 2 results.

Pfizer raises guidance to $62.5B as BioNTech cuts forecast amid $928M loss

Pfizer and BioNTech reported contrasting second-quarter 2026 results as their post-pandemic strategies diverge. While the European Commission authorised their updated COVID-19 vaccine on 29 July, the former partners now face different financial realities. Pfizer posted revenues of $15 billion, up 1% operationally year-over-year. Excluding COVID products, revenue grew 5%, driven by strong performance from Eliquis, Padcev, and other non-COVID products. The company raised full-year revenue guidance by $500 million to $60.5–$62.5 billion and announced productivity initiatives expected to deliver $2.5 billion in additional savings between 2027 and 2029. BioNTech revenues fell 59.5% to €105.6 million as COVID vaccine demand declined. The company reported a net loss of €820.8 million and reduced full-year revenue guidance to €1.6–€1.9 billion. BioNTech maintains €16.6 billion in cash reserves.

Pfizer's earnings fall 58%, but dividend appears safe for now

Pfizer reported a 58% decline in net income for the first half of 2024, falling to $2.4 billion from $5.9 billion year-over-year. The decline was largely driven by $3.8 billion in non-cash impairment charges related to in-process research and development assets. Despite the earnings drop, the dividend appears sustainable. Over the past four quarters, Pfizer generated $11 billion in free cash flow, exceeding the approximately $9.8 billion paid in dividends. The company has struggled with growth whilst managing restructuring costs and integrating recent acquisitions. Its second quarter ended 30 June with a $248 million net loss. Pfizer's stock has fallen 44% over five years, though it's up 9% year-to-date. The dividend currently yields 6.4%.

Pfizer Q2 earnings beat at 77¢/share, revenue guidance raised to $62.5B on non-COVID growth

Pfizer reported second-quarter revenue of $15.03 billion and raised its full-year revenue guidance to $60.5 billion to $62.5 billion, up from a previous range of $59.5 billion to $62.5 billion. Adjusted earnings reached 77 cents per share, beating the 68-cent consensus estimate. Revenue growth was led by Eliquis, which rose 19% operationally, and Padcev, which climbed 23%. Paxlovid fell 95% amid lower COVID-19 infection rates, whilst Comirnaty declined 34%. Excluding COVID products, revenues grew 5% operationally. The company announced an additional $2.5 billion in cost savings expected from 2027 through 2029. CFO Dave Denton is departing on 15 August, with Cecile Guegan stepping in as interim CFO. Pfizer shares rose 1.8% to $25.50 in premarket trading.

Pfizer returned $49B to shareholders but stock fell 21% over five years

Pfizer returned $49 billion to shareholders over five years through dividends and buybacks, equal to 34% of its current market value. Despite this substantial cash distribution, the stock delivered a -21% total return whilst the S&P 500 gained 81% over the same period. The pharmaceutical giant generated the payouts from a $63 billion business with a 25% operating margin. Of the total returned, $47 billion came from dividends and $2 billion from share repurchases. Management has affirmed its commitment to maintaining and growing dividends whilst reducing leverage. However, the company faces a "patent cliff" with $14-15 billion in annual revenue at risk from loss of exclusivity. Revenue growth stands at just 1.4% over the last twelve months, raising concerns that heavy payouts reflect fewer high-return reinvestment opportunities as core growth engines slow.
