Requirements
  • Certification is required upon hire for Pennsylvania applicants unless the applicant is a new graduate.
  • A new graduate must obtain the required certificate within six months of the hiring date.
  • Acceptable certifications include National Center for Competency Testing certification or National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting certification.
  • The role requires the physical ability to stand for up to eight hours per day, walk for up to eight to ten hours per day, handle instruments with continuous manual dexterity, lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds, push objects exceeding 100 pounds, stoop and bend, reach above shoulder level, and respond quickly.
  • The role requires hearing normal conversation and high and low frequencies, general, near, far, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to tolerate visual monotony.
Responsibilities
  • Check the supplies and equipment needed for each surgical procedure.
  • Scrub, gown, and glove self and members of the surgical team.
  • Set up the sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications or solutions required for the procedure, and ensure they are in good working condition.
  • Perform appropriate counts with the circulator before the operation and before the incision is closed.
  • Assist with draping the sterile field.
  • Pass instruments, retractors, sutures, and other items to the surgeon during the procedure.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
  • Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
  • Handle surgical specimens appropriately and safely.
  • Handle sharps and medications in accordance with operating-room safety policies.
