Requirements
  • Knowledge of the less-than-truckload transportation industry.
  • Experience managing drivers and dockworkers.
  • Knowledge of the surrounding geographical area to the service center.
  • Ability to perform administrative and operational duties in an office and dock environment, including standing and walking for extended periods, pushing or pulling equipment, operating material-handling equipment, and occasionally assisting with physical dock tasks such as handling freight and related materials.
  • Knowledge and application of company safety practices, including Department of Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency, Interstate Commerce Commission, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules and regulations, and ability to ensure worker compliance.
  • Ability to participate in the Controlled Substance Testing Program, including pre-employment, random reasonable-cause, and post-accident testing.
Responsibilities
  • Develop methods and procedures for efficient and economical routing and movement of customers' freight while meeting established service center budget guidelines.
  • Utilize the T.E.A.M. System for pickup-and-delivery and dock operations, as well as the trailer utilization report, to maximize company assets, equipment, and personnel capabilities.
  • Prepare and compile daily, weekly, and monthly production and service records and measure conformance to service center objectives.
  • Observe, inspect, and measure service center personnel proficiencies to determine changes in work practices or procedures needed to improve service center operations.
  • Review logs and reports and confer with shift supervisory personnel to determine scheduling, production, and administrative support requirements.
  • Maintain internal and external customer relations consistent with company policies.
  • Receive constructive criticism and praise in a business-like manner and maintain a professional, positive attitude.
  • Assist with training, development, and evaluation of supervisory and production personnel performance, and recommend or initiate personnel-record documentation.
  • Recruit prospective subordinate employees, including screening, qualifying, and interviewing candidates in conjunction with the Service Center Manager.
  • Inspect service center facilities for compliance with prescribed safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Inspect service center security, including bay doors, tractors, keys, and freight in appointment trailers.
  • Manage routine maintenance and repairs and initiate requisitions for corrective actions through the Service Center Manager.
  • Work with the Line Coordinator to plan and implement line-haul schedules and achieve on-time service performance requirements.
  • Confer with line-haul, sales, maintenance, claims, and other departments to coordinate service center activities.
  • Issue directives to subordinates to coordinate the movement of expedited, late, or special-circumstance freight.
  • Assist in investigating accidents and job-related injuries, ensure timely and accurate report preparation, initiate corrective actions, and coordinate with the Director of Safety.
  • Assist in preparing and conducting regular service center meetings covering service center performance, company trends, sales and marketing plans, and individual accomplishments and performance.
  • Coordinate and facilitate company- and service-center-sponsored Total Quality Management continuous-improvement processes and complete special assignments as directed.
