Responsibilities
  • Serve as a customer service ambassador to staff, physicians, patients, and families through demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Support the daily operations and activity flow of the patient care area by performing administrative functions and acting as a central source of information for staff, physicians, patients, families, and other departments.
  • Operate all communications and answering-service equipment to facilitate smooth facility operations.
  • Operate an electronic message center while sitting at a personal computer and keyboard for extended periods.
  • Answer and receive incoming calls and refer callers to the proper extension using telephone-number listings.
  • Establish rapport with families and visitors, initiate contact, and determine customers’ needs upon arrival to the unit.
  • Direct patient, family, and physician concerns to the appropriate person.
  • Provide routing information to callers in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Assist with and maintain accurate in-house Medicall lists by writing or typing information for the supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate on-call personnel lists and contact on-call personnel during off hours.
  • Visually and audibly monitor hospital alarms, including CODE BLUE, CODE ORANGE, CODE PINK, CODE PURPLE, CODE STRONG, CODE RED, CODE 100, RAPID RESPONSE TEAM, CODE STORK, STROKE RESPONSE TEAM, CODE SILVER, and STAT PAGE alerts, and follow related hospital and department policies and procedures.
  • Reach above head level to turn off alarms when monitoring alarms.
  • Page authorized personnel over the hospital public address system.
  • Answer physicians’ answering-service calls, create reliable typed messages, and transmit messages to clients by telephone, cell phone, or pager.
  • Contact imaging technicians for ECHO, MRI, vascular, nuclear medicine, and other imaging services.
  • Maintain accurate and clear typed and written records of all transactions in the hospital electronic health record.
  • Maintain confidentiality concerning clients, patients, visitors, staff, and physicians’ answering-service functions.
  • Verbally notify the Telecommunications Technician or telephone company of needed repairs after speaking with telephone-system users.
  • Assist with language equipment and remote controls.
  • Maintain the language cart.
  • Attend required meetings.
Desired Qualifications
  • High school graduation or equivalent training and experience is preferred.
  • One year of experience as a hospital and/or answering service operator is preferred.
