  • A one-year certificate from a college or technical school, at least three years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to pass the required AWS D1 3G and 4G welding tests.
  • Ability to pass the required ASME 2-inch schedule 160 6G pipe welding tests.
  • Ability to pass the required API 1104 12-inch standard butt and branch welding tests.
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends and be on-call when needed.
  • Understanding of measuring tape, material grades, alloys, miter cuts, fitting take-offs, and blueprint interpretation.
  • Understanding of fittings and layouts using pipefitters criteria.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Ability to calculate proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume and apply basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and interpret written, oral, diagram, or schedule instructions.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including regularly lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in conditions involving fumes, outdoor weather, extreme heat, radiation, elevated locations, electrical shock, chemicals, explosives, and loud noise.
  • Must participate in and successfully complete the in-house Smith Driver's Training system.
  • Must meet applicable insurance requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain the specified electrode based on the raw goods being welded and set up the welding machine and workpiece.
  • Set welding amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse according to established standards.
  • Start engine-driven or electric welding machines and generate the heat and molten puddle needed to join workpieces.
  • Preheat workpieces with a hand torch or heating furnace when applicable.
  • Position and clamp workpieces or assemble them in a jig or fixture, then tack and weld assemblies together.
  • Manually guide the electrode or welding gun to produce welds with the specified fusion depth, width, and convexity.
  • Perform flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead, and 6G pipe welding, including butt and branch welds.
  • Clean slag from weld joints and visually inspect bead size, crown shape, porosity, and undercut according to AWS, ASME, and API 1104 specifications.
  • Repair out-of-code equipment and raw goods, including broken or cracked parts, and fill cavities.
  • Prepare parts for nondestructive testing by removing excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Gather dimensions and lay out structural steel and high-pressure piping.
  • Calculate rolls, offsets, miters, and POP to produce prefabricated finished goods.
  • Fabricate and install conductors, Braiden-heads, casing cut-offs, and plug-and-abandon components.
  • Prepare bills of material and isometric drawings for compressor and pig-launcher installations.
  • Oversee installation and completion of assigned projects.
  • Work overtime when needed; hours and schedules may vary based on operational tempo.
Desired Qualifications
  • Welding certification is preferred.
  • Hot work permit certification is a plus.
  • Forklift certification is a plus.
