Requirements
  • Some knowledge of methods, practices, materials, and tools used in building maintenance trades, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, electricity, blacksmithing, and cement finishing.
  • Some knowledge of methods, practices, materials, and tools used to maintain machinery such as pumps, compressors, meters, feeding and mixing mechanisms, valves, reduction gears, and furnaces.
  • Some knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in maintaining buildings, facilities, and mechanical equipment.
  • Skill in using tools and equipment for building and mechanical equipment maintenance.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, with manual coordination and dexterity.
  • Ability to perform work safely and avoid injury to self, citizens, and other employees.
  • Skill in using firefighting equipment.
  • Ability to recognize and report unusual or unsafe conditions to a supervisor.

  • Ability to visually inspect equipment, read gauges and work orders, and distinguish colors, warnings, and safety signals.

Responsibilities
  • Perform or assist with general maintenance tasks such as painting, plumbing, masonry, carpentry, and landscaping.
  • Inspect county facilities for maintenance issues and report defects.
  • Assist custodial staff with janitorial duties, including washing windows.
  • Make minor repairs to plumbing fixtures.
  • Assist in constructing and painting wood-frame and metal articles.
  • Assist with tasks requiring additional personnel.
  • Operate snow-removal equipment, lawn mowers, tractors, and other vehicles.
  • Check vehicles for fuel, antifreeze, water, tires, and related needs.
  • Remove refuse and unsafe articles.
  • Place stock in storerooms.
  • Work inside and outside in a variety of conditions.
  • Complete forms and other records as required.
  • Drive cars and light trucks on errands and transport people as required.
  • Participate in fire and safety programs.
  • Service and repair defective electrical, mechanical, and plumbing equipment in county buildings and facilities.
  • Perform skilled or technical maintenance work as required.
  • Perform other related work as required.
