Thanks to your generous support, Team Hydro funded three new research grants since its last swim. * Addressing infection as a driver of hydrocephalus worldwide. While most hydrocephalus in the United States develops following a brain hemorrhage, infection remains the leading cause worldwide. Investigators at Yale are partnering with Jinja Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda to strengthen diagnostic capacity for Paenibacillus, a bacterium associated with a rising number of neonatal infections and cases of post-infectious hydrocephalus in East Africa and, more recently, in the United States. The grant supports evaluation of a point-of-care diagnostic assay alongside genomic sequencing to characterize antimicrobial resistance and virulence. Earlier and more accurate diagnosis offers the potential to prevent hydrocephalus before it develops. * Choroid plexus-targeted therapy to reduce cerebrospinal fluid production. Investigators at Cincinnati Children's Hospital are developing a biologic therapy directed at the choroid plexus, the tissue responsible for producing cerebrospinal fluid, in order to reduce the fluid accumulation that characterizes hydrocephalus.
