Urban Practice breaks ground on 112 military homes at Fort Benning. Neighborhood emphasizes walkability, connection, and everyday family life for military residents Fort Benning, GA, May 11, 2026 - Urban Practice joined Colonel Jerel D. Evans, Fort Benning's Garrison Commander, and development partner The Michaels Organization to celebrate the groundbreaking of Norton Court, a new residential neighborhood bringing 112 townhomes to military families at Fort Benning. The new two-story homes will replace 112 legacy townhomes originally built in the 1950s and will feature three- and four-bedroom layouts, detached garages, and fenced backyards. Planned as a central neighborhood within Fort Benning, Norton Court was designed to support both everyday family life and a strong sense of community for military families who often relocate throughout their service. "We understood early on that this project was about building both homes and community," said Jim Haley, Principal at Urban Practice. "Military families are constantly adapting to new places and routines, so we focused on creating a neighborhood that encourages connection, supports daily life, and feels welcoming from the moment families arrive." The neighborhood is organized around walkable streets, front porches, shared green spaces, playgrounds, and gathering areas intended to encourage interaction among residents and create opportunities for neighbors and families to connect over time. Inside the homes, the design emphasizes comfort, functionality, and long-term sustainability, with open living spaces, energy-efficient systems, and layouts designed to support the routines of everyday family life. Norton Court is named in honor of Captain John Henry "Jack" Norton of the 47th Infantry Regiment, who displayed extraordinary heroism in combat. A portion of the Fort Benning training grounds was officially named after the Norton family in 1925. Construction on the new community is expected to be completed in May 2028. (ADAMS) - Downtown Fort Wayne and Art This Way have announced that internationally recognized artist duo Studio Giftig will create a large-scale mural at 206 Pearl Street on The Landing. Installation will begin in mid-May, with completion anticipated in late May. The mural will span the north-facing elevation of the building, home to Tolon and Randall Lofts Apartments, and will expand the growing collection of public art along South Harrison Street and the Urban Trail corridor. The public is encouraged to attend and to visit The Landing throughout the installation process. Studio Giftig, Niels van Swaemen and Kaspar van Leek, is a Netherlands-based artist duo known for photorealistic and surrealistic murals. Since 2007, they have created large-scale works across Europe and the United States, including Miami, Florida. Their work has earned international recognition, including the "Best Mural Worldwide" award in both 2022 and 2024, most recently for Echoes of Harmony, which explored the unifying power of music. The Fort Wayne mural draws inspiration from the city's identity as the City of Three Rivers. Water is used as a visual thread to represent connection, continuity, and the passage of time. The composition also incorporates apples as symbolic elements, referencing the region's natural richness and the legacy of Johnny Appleseed, while representing knowledge, insight, and awareness. The apples will emit a soft glow, serving as both a literal and figurative source of light within the piece. Commissioners, Michaels Organization celebrate opening of $30 million 81-unit affordable housing complex in Voorhees Township. * April 30, 2026 On Thursday, the Board of Commissioners celebrated the grand opening of Victory Commons, a $30 million, 81-unit affordable housing complex located in the heart of Voorhees Township. Units will be income-restricted to households earning 60% or less of the Area Median Income, and feature One-, two-, and three-bedroom floorplans, ample parking, a clubhouse, and other amenities. According to Zillow, the United States' housing deficit grew to 4.7 million in 2025, furthering the nation's affordability crisis. This staggering statistic underscores the value of investing in affordable housing throughout Camden County. "Increasing access to safe, high-quality affordable housing remains a paramount priority for the Board of Commissioners. Developments like Victory Commons are critical to ensuring that more of our residents throughout the county have a place they can call home," said Commissioner Director Louis Cappelli Jr. "We are proud to partner with the Michaels Organization in the development of Victory Commons, and I look forward to seeing this community grow and thrive." Financing for the $30 million development includes $9.2 million in private equity raised through the sale of federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits allocated by the New Jersey Housing Finance Agency (NJHFA). NJHFA also provided a $5 million permanent mortgage, as well as $10 million in Housing Production Loan funds and $750,000 through the NJHFA Special Needs Housing Trust Fund. The development also benefited from a $1.8 million HOME Investment Partnership Loan provided by Camden County. Victory Commons is located within walking distance of two elementary schools, a public playground and park, community garden, municipal offices, daycare, and several retail stores and restaurants. The convenient location allows for easy commute by car or rail to Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and New York City.
