GiveWell is a nonprofit research organization that identifies and recommends charities working in global health and poverty alleviation based on how much good they do per dollar. Founded in 2007, it evaluates programs by gathering independent evidence, building cost-effectiveness models, interviewing staff, conducting site visits, and monitoring results, producing over 70,000 hours of research a year. It publishes a short annual list of top charities plus detailed reports and offers donation funds—Top Charities, All Grants, and Unrestricted—while charging no fees to donors or charities. What sets GiveWell apart is its transparent methodology and openness, including publishing its own mistakes and making all research freely available. The goal is to help donors do as much good as possible, having directed over $2.6 billion to recommended organizations and, by its estimate, helped save more than 340,000 lives.

What believers are saying

  • July 2026 updates say GiveWell already exceeded 2025 grants and targets $1 billion this year.
  • June 2026 hiring spans research, grants, and operations, signaling expansion across every function.
  • AMF received a $96.3 million GiveWell grant in 2025, proving scalable deployment remains strong.

What critics are saying

  • Coefficient Giving now dominates funding; withdrawal would slash 2026 grantmaking and staff growth.
  • USAID cuts distorted GiveWell’s pipeline in 2025; funding a few programs risks concentration.
  • AI-era donors can bypass GiveWell; if recommendations lose edge, its relevance erodes fast.

What makes GiveWell unique

  • GiveWell directs evidence-based global health grants, reaching $418 million in 2025.
  • Its marginal-cost-effectiveness threshold and open RFPs, like July 2026 water funding, sharpen capital allocation.
  • Coefficient Giving’s $1 billion 2026 commitment validates GiveWell’s brand and sourcing power.
