From Deadwood to Deadrock: Man on the Move

From deadwood to Deadrock: man on the move. Keeping up with actor, artist, Samuel Jackson Enemy-Hunter, Crow Tribal member, is always a challenge. He is a man on the move. Most recently, he finished an Artist in-Residence period in Sept. at the Indian Museum of North America in the Native American Educational and Cultural Center at the Crazy Horse Memorial, N.D. But by the first week of Oct., Enemy-Hunter could be found back in Montana at the Crazy Mountain Ranch in the non-existent town of Deadrock. Clearly, there is a story here. In the shadow of the 11,000-odd feet Crazy Mountain range spreading 40 miles out, the ranch is described on the ranch website as rather unique: "In 1990, publisher Glenn Patch purchased the ranch for the enjoyment of his family and began to assemble the vintage western town of 'Deadrock' on the property, which today continues to be a notable and unique feature of the ranch. As one walks along 'Main Street', you will encounter a wide variety of historical buildings, settler's cabins, hotels, antique furnishings, reclaimed building materials and interesting artifacts, all of which were found and moved to the ranch from towns all over Montana and the West. In 1999, the Philip Morris Corporation purchased the ranch from Patch. For the next 22 years, the property was utilized to reward loyal Marlboro customers by bringing them out to experience the mountains and wide-open spaces of the West. In 2021, Lone Mountain Land Company acquired the ranch to run as a private membership experience featuring outdoor and mountain recreation, golf, lodging and much more. Just as importantly, the 18,000 acre property continues to be run as working cattle ranch that reflects the traditions and work ethic of Montana. Lone Mountain Land Company is partnering with Discovery Land Company to operate the ranch as a private membership." At this point, it is necessary to explain what happened to bring Enemy-Hunter to Deadrock. It was a call to create an instant event. He did not need to be asked twice and knew where to turn. "If I need a last minute posse for an event I can always count on family John Birdinground Marie Faith Birdinground Susan Birdinground Marnie Faith Littlelight and LGerians!" He explained, "Lynn-Wood Fields and I attended an event sponsored by the Harbor Fund in old town Deadrock at Crazy Mountain Ranch and they wanted a drum group and dancers for a cultural demonstration. Wolf Bear (Damon Gros Ventre and crew) stepped up and brought some dancers with them. My sister Elizabeth Swank and Samone came from Bozeman too. I could be wrong but the Crazy Mountains probably haven't heard Apsaalooke songs in over 100 years since the first Crow Agency was moved." The drum keeper, Gros Ventre, also had something to say about the event. "The name WolfBear is my Indian name. How I came up with that, I wanted something new and fresh around the reservation. So that's how we got the name. Active for a year now. We're from the Crow Reservation, we travel around for powwows in state and out of state, and we are always willing to sing for the love of it. And we are thankful for the invite to sing Tuesday." Looking back, Enemy Hunter reflected. "Actors Seth Greene and David Oyelowo were in attendance and spent time with the crew and have never seen or heard anything like it. More events to come and I have this crew on speed dial. A'HO!" What's next for Enemy-Hunter? Parlez vous Francais? Another residency to follow.
