Requirements
  • Hold a qualification in environmental science, soil science, chemistry, environmental engineering, biogeochemistry, materials science, or a related discipline.
  • Have completed, or expect to complete, a bachelor's degree with honours equivalent to second-class honours, or a master's degree incorporating a significant research component comparable to a bachelor's honours degree, or an equivalent level of attainment recognized by Griffith University.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress throughout candidature.
  • Submit a statement addressing suitability, evidence of the required academic grades, a curriculum vitae, and the names and contact details of two referees.
  • Expressions of interest are open to domestic and onshore international applicants.
Responsibilities
  • Investigate the degradation and fragmentation pathways of biodegradable plastics under different soil conditions.
  • Quantify the formation, abundance, and persistence of residual micro- and nano-plastic particles in soil.
  • Assess plant uptake, translocation, and potential accumulation of degraded plastic particles within plant tissues.
  • Evaluate the implications of biodegradable plastic degradation for soil health, environmental sustainability, and food-chain exposure.
  • Conduct laboratory, greenhouse, and analytical studies in collaboration with research and industry partners.
  • Participate in collaborative research activities and contribute to publications, presentations, and thesis outputs arising from the project.

  • Experience with laboratory research, soil–plant interactions, or environmental analytical techniques.
  • A strong interest in environmental sustainability and research on the degradation, environmental fate, and impacts of biodegradable plastics in soil–plant systems.
