Primetals to upgrade Nucor continuous caster. Published 30th July, 2026 by Pete Downham US steel producer Nucor Steel Decatur has selected Primetals Technologies for the revamp of the continuous thin-slab caster at its Decatur, Alabama plant. The project is set to upgrade the segments with wider, more robust frames with improved spray patterns while meeting current quality and production targets. The upgrade will also see the caster go from a two-roller to a three-roller design, resulting in 50% more bearing capacity. Primetals highlighted that the upgrade will enable Nucor Steel Decatur to implement dynamic soft-core reduction in the future, improving internal product quality. The caster will be the first Primetals Technologies-designed continuous thin-slab caster in Nucor, and will be completely manufactured, assembled, tested and commissioned in Alabama. The project is set to take three years to complete, with Primetals also providing the full spectrum of engineering services for machine design, including engineering analyses for the frames, roller assemblies, support structures, and secondary cooling. Primetals Technologies completes world's first robotic coil trimming system installation at Hyundai Steel! Tuesday 21 July 2026, 8:07:53 AM Primetals Technologies has successfully completed the installation and commissioning of TrimRob, the world's first foundry-rated robotic coil trimming and sampling system, at Hyundai Steel's wire rod mill in Dangjin, South Korea. Following successful commissioning, the company has received the Final Acceptance Certificate (FAC), confirming that the system has met all contractual performance and operational requirements. The project was delivered in collaboration with Polytec, a global specialist in robotic automation solutions. The successful deployment marks a significant milestone in the automation of steel manufacturing processes, introducing a fully autonomous solution for trimming and sampling hot wire rod coils. By replacing labour-intensive manual operations with intelligent robotic technology, the new system is expected to significantly improve workplace safety, enhance operational efficiency, and deliver greater consistency in product quality while supporting Hyundai Steel's smart manufacturing initiatives. Wire rod production is one of the most demanding processes in steel manufacturing, with coils being produced approximately every minute at temperatures exceeding 1,000°C. Traditionally, trimming the head and tail of each coil and collecting quality samples requires two to four operators per shift, who manually perform the task using handheld cutting tools. The process exposes workers to extreme heat, repetitive physical movements, and potentially hazardous operating conditions while maintaining stringent production quality standards. TrimRob has been specifically developed to eliminate these operational challenges by automating the complete trimming and sampling process. The system integrates advanced robotics, intelligent machine vision, and specialised cutting technology to perform the entire operation without direct operator intervention. This not only removes personnel from hazardous work environments but also delivers greater precision and repeatability throughout the production process. At the heart of the solution is an advanced machine vision system capable of analysing each wire rod coil in real time. Using sophisticated image-processing algorithms, the system identifies individual wire rings, detects tangles, overlapping sections, and irregular coil formations before automatically determining the optimal cutting location. This intelligent processing enables highly accurate trimming regardless of variations in wire diameter, coil geometry, or steel grade, ensuring consistent sample preparation and improved production efficiency. The robotic trimming unit is equipped with a specially engineered cutting tool designed to withstand the harsh conditions found in hot rolling environments. Built to operate reliably under extreme temperatures and demanding industrial conditions, the system delivers precise cuts while maintaining high production throughput and reducing process variability. According to Ravindra Goyal, Head of Process at Primetals Technologies USA, automation is playing an increasingly important role in the global steel industry as manufacturers seek to improve productivity while creating safer working environments. He explained that TrimRob significantly reduces the risk of repetitive strain injuries and workplace accidents by removing operators from dangerous production areas, allowing employees to focus on higher-value operational and supervisory responsibilities within the manufacturing process. Extensive factory acceptance testing conducted at Hyundai Steel's Dangjin facility confirmed that the robotic system successfully achieved all agreed operational and performance targets. During testing, TrimRob consistently maintained the required production cycle times while processing wire rods ranging from 5.5 mm to 20 mm in diameter across multiple steel grades and varying material strengths. The successful validation demonstrated the system's ability to operate reliably under a wide range of production conditions. The automated solution has also been engineered to improve quality assurance within the wire rod manufacturing process. TrimRob accurately cuts the precise sample length required for laboratory inspection or, when metallurgical testing requires, one additional wire ring. By consistently producing samples that meet specification without cutting below the required length, the system enhances quality control, reduces material waste, and improves process reliability throughout production. The successful implementation at Hyundai Steel demonstrates the growing adoption of robotics, artificial intelligence, and machine vision technologies across the global metals industry. The new furnace will be installed at Outokumpu's facility in Calvert, Alabama, replacing an existing ladle treatment stand from 2012. This upgrade will reduce the plant's carbon footprint, improve temperature control, and provide greater operational flexibility. Enhanced operational flexibility. At the Calvert plant, Outokumpu melts up to 100 percent stainless steel scrap in an electric arc furnace (EAF), followed by processing in an argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) converter. Upgrading one of two ladle treatment stands to the twin ladle furnace will increase flexibility in the AOD process by adding electrical heating capacity after the converter. The installation will utilize the plant's original layout and foundation to ensure smooth integration. The scope of supply includes key mechanical equipment such as a water-cooled ladle cover integrated with the swing gantry system, Primetals Technologies' patented electrode conducting arm with high-current system, automated argon lancing equipment, a hydraulic system, Melt Expert electrode control system, a power solution, and Level 1 automation. Hoa Phat to enter high-quality market for steel products in Vietnam. LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM- Primetals Technologies and Hoa Phat Dung Quat Steel JSC have started up a new production line at the steel plant in Dung Quat, Quang Ngai province, Central Vietnam. The project includes two slab casters, a hot-strip mill, advanced automation systems, and comprehensive digitalization solutions. Through-Process Quality Control (TPQC), a fully integrated quality control system, intelligent digital assistants, and a production management system ensure high quality, productivity, and flexibility. Vietnam's steel market is expanding rapidly. With an increased capacity of 5.5 million metric tons per year, Hoa Phat is now better positioned to meet the rising demand for steel products. Primetals Technologies has received the final acceptance certificate (FAC) for the hot-strip mill, and both casters have successfully started up. The entire production line achieved a remarkably swift ramp-up, reaching production of a 1.5-millimeter low-carbon steel coil just six weeks after the start of production. They produce slabs with a thickness of 230 millimeters and widths ranging from 900 to 1,650 millimeters, at casting speeds up to 2 meters per minute. The integrated process control and process optimization systems are equipped with modern expert systems and innovative process models to improve product quality and performance. The advanced LevCon system enhances mold-level control, while the DynaWidth system enables fast and flexible slab-width changes. The DynaFlex hydraulic oscillator further improves strand-surface quality by optimizing mold-oscillation parameters. Advanced Hot-Strip Mill The hot-strip mill, with a rated capacity of 5.5 million metric tons per year, produces coils weighing up to 36 tons, with thicknesses from 1.2 to 25.4 millimeters and widths from 900 to 1,650 millimeters. The mill includes a slab-sizing press, two single-stand reversing roughing mill stands with attached edgers, a 7-stand finishing mill, three down coilers, laminar cooling, and auxiliary systems. Four stands in the finishing mill are equipped with pair cross technology, allowing optimal adjustment of the roll-gap contour and improved control over strip profile. Proven designs and advanced automation ensure the equipment works seamlessly to produce high-quality coils across the product mix. Transforming Data into Quality and Performance TPQC helps Hoa Phat maximize product and process quality throughout the entire production chain. (WISCO) and Primetals Technologies have signed a contract for a six-strand bloom caster project in Wuhan, China. The project is part of WISCO's initiative to improve its production line layout, with the new caster further strengthening the company's manufacturing capabilities in high-end areas such as rail steel and automotive. Primetals highlighted that the project will enable stable, precise continuous casting through advanced equipment and optimised process configurations to meet stringent quality standards. The project will integrate multiple advanced technologies, including tubular and plate moulds, the DynaFlex dual-arm oscillation system, mould and strand electromagnetic stirrers, and Dynacs 3D dynamic secondary cooling.
