JD Sports shares fall 2% as Nike warns of further revenue drops amid China slump

JD Sports shares fell approximately 2% on Wednesday after Nike warned that its turnaround efforts remain incomplete, projecting continued revenue declines amid a worsening sales slump in China. Nike reported a 1% revenue decline in its fiscal fourth quarter and forecasted additional drops through the first half of fiscal 2027. The company continues facing stiff competition and elevated inventory levels. Nike shares have fallen 35% this year and dropped another 3% in premarket trading. China proved the most acute pressure point, with Greater China sales falling 17% on a constant-currency basis, worsening from a 10% decline previously. JD Sports to close 175 Hibbett stores by 2027 after $1.08B acquisition

Hibbett, which operates sneaker retail brands including Hibbett, City Gear and Sports Additions, plans to close approximately 175 stores by the end of 2027. The company was acquired by JD Sports Fashion in April 2024 for $1.08 billion. JD Sports CEO Régis Schultz saw the acquisition as strategic, strengthening the company's presence in the southeastern US where it had limited footprint. The deal was part of JD Sports' broader North American expansion, which includes previous purchases of Finish Line, Shoe Palace and DTLR, building a $6 billion annual business. Schultz criticised rivals for focusing too heavily on internet sales whilst neglecting physical stores. The US has since become JD Sports' largest market, though Hibbett has now opted to reduce its retail portfolio significantly.
