August 20, 2026 @ 5:15pm KUALA LUMPUR: MMC Port Holdings Bhd is said to have appointed Glen Hilton, DP World's CEO and managing director for Asia Pacific as its new group CEO, assuming the role left vacant since Datuk Azman Shah Mohd Yusof stepped down in July. Hilton will be the second top executive from DP World to assume top leadership positions at MMC Port, following the appointment of Sultan Ahmed Sulayem as the executive chairman of the port group. Sources in the port industry confirm that Hilton resigned from his position at DP World about two weeks ago, and is set to take over the job at MMC Port in October. "They (Hilton and Sultan Ahmed) are brought in to try to grow the business of MMC Port, modelled after DP World," said a source. A request for MMC to comment on the news went unanswered as at press time. Despite the appointment of Sultan Ahmed and Hilton to the top two positions at MMC Port, the source rejects the notion that DP World is taking a substantial stake in the port group owned by MMC Corp Bhd. The news of the appointment comes amid speculation that MMC has scrapped its plan to list the port group altogether, after failing to attain the valuation that it was seeking for. However, with Hilton is said to be taking over the group CEO role at MMC Port, and Sultan Ahmed, the architect behind the rise of DP World from the operator of a single port in Dubai to a massive global network of over 60 marine and inland ports and terminals, shows the ambition of MMC to grow its port business, the sources said. "The motivation for Sultan Ahmed and Hilton could come from specific targets to grow the business and hence valuation of MMC Port," said one of the sources. Earlier on Thursday, a financial portal said that MMC has instructed advisers to halt work on the proposed listing on Bursa Malaysia's Main Market of its port business. The portal, quoting two people familiar with the matter, said advisers had been asked to stop the listing process, citing concerns over the valuation sought for MMC Port. Hilton is not a stranger to MMC Port, having previously served as the CEO of Malaysia's largest container terminal, the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), between March 2013 and February 2016. MMC Port owns a 70 per cent stake in PTP. According to DP World's website, Hilton has more than thirty years of experience in logistics as well as port and terminal operations. As the CEO and MD for the Asia Pacific region, Hilton oversees DP World's operations across the region. Based in Singapore, Hilton started his career with DP World in 2005. He had also served as the head of DP World's Southeast Asian operations.Besides its 70 per cent holding in PTP, MMC Port also owns Northport (M) Bhd, one of the terminals at Port Klang, Johor Port in Pasir Gudang, Penang Port, and Tanjung Bruas Port in Melaka.

The figures point to growing use of overland routes by cargo owners and shipping lines seeking alternatives when established maritime routes face disruption. "Moving half a million TEUs overland shows the scale, resilience and flexibility of our network beyond the terminal gates. Our extensive inland logistics capabilities give shipping lines and cargo owners more routing options and more certainty in how they move goods through the region, helping them adapt quickly when conditions change," Ahmad Yousef Al-Hassan, CEO and MD of DP World GCC, said. DP World has also opened a 100,000-square-metre inland empty container depot in Al Awir, Dubai, adding storage and release capacity away from Jebel Ali Port. The facility allows shipping lines and logistics operators to pick up, drop off and reposition empty containers across Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates without relying solely on movements through the port. Located with direct access to Emirates Road, the depot connects with major logistics and industrial areas across the UAE and could also support future rail-based container movements through Etihad Rail. It can handle 20-foot, 40-foot and 45-foot empty containers and offers inspection, condition reporting and shipping line inventory management services. "By moving empty container storage and handling closer to customers, we can reduce unnecessary movements to the port and make it easier for shipping lines and logistics companies to access and reposition equipment. EDECS Group secures Dar es Salaam Port modernisation project. Posted on August 20, 2026 The project's construction work underway on-site, demonstrates EDECS' delivery momentum and its expanding role in developing strategic marine and logistics infrastructure EDECS Group, a EPC contractor in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, has secured a strategic contract from DP World, a global provider of end-to-end supply chain, logistics, port terminal, and trade solutions. This contract involves the redevelopment of seven operational yards at Tanzania's Dar es Salaam Port terminal 1, which is operated by DP World Dar Es Salaam. The project, which already has construction work underway on-site, demonstrates EDECS' delivery momentum and its expanding role in developing strategic marine and logistics infrastructure across the region. Under the project scope, EDECS is responsible for designing and constructing seven dedicated cargo and material handling yards, each with an area of 10,000 m^2. These yards will be equipped with associated gates and supporting utilities. The project aims to modernise the infrastructure and provide support for advanced digital yard management systems. It also includes enhanced cargo storage and handling facilities and sustainable engineering solutions to improve operational performance and future readiness. Additionally, EDECS is implementing a comprehensive port-wide fire protection network that covers the entire port, including areas beyond the original project scope. New weekly service links Ecuador's Posorja port directly with Asia. DP World launched the AX4 shipping service (also known as NW4), operated jointly by Ocean Network Express and Hyundai Merchant Marine, providing Ecuadorian exporters with an additional direct connection to Asia. The new weekly service reduces reliance on transshipment hubs and offers transit times of approximately 21 days, supporting key import and export sectors including bananas, broccoli, and other temperature-sensitive products that depend on reliable transportation to Asian markets. The launch marks the third direct Asia service operating through DP World's Port of Posorja. Operated by vessels with capacities exceeding 8,000 TEUs, the service expands shipping options for exporters while strengthening Ecuador's connectivity to one of its fastest-growing customer markets. Expanded shipping connectivity Since 2023, the Port of Posorja has doubled the number of shipping services calling at the terminal, increasing from four to eight weekly services and connecting Ecuador with more than 40 ports across Asia, Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Americas. DP World has invested approximately US$700 million in its deep-water port terminal in Posorja since operations began in 2019. In April 2026, the company inaugurated the port's new 700-meter berth, enabling the simultaneous handling of two large container vessels. By the end of 2026, the berth will reach 800 meters, increasing annual capacity to 1.4 million TEUs. The port was also recently ranked first in Latin America and 20th globally in the 2025 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), reinforcing its position among the world's most efficient container ports. Role in agricultural exports The Port of Posorja plays a key role in Ecuador's export economy, particularly for the agricultural and seafood sectors, where it has become the country's leading gateway for refrigerated cargo. According to the Ecuadorian Banana Marketing and Export Association (ACORBANEC), the terminal handled more than 100 million boxes of bananas in 2025, representing 28.16% of the country's total banana export volume. Its share of the country's containerized banana exports was even higher, at approximately 35%. The association's latest monthly report shows that between January and May 2026, banana volumes through Posorja exceeded 50 million boxes, an increase of nearly 10% compared with the same period last year.
