Robinson named to Butkus Award Preseason Watch List. The award is presented annually to the nation's top linebacker The Butkus Foundation announced today (Aug. 13) that Virginia's Kam Robinson has been named one of 51 players nationwide to the preseason watch list for the 42nd annual Butkus Award(R), presented annually to the nation's top linebacker. Robinson was named one of 12 semifinalists for last year's Butkus Award after leading the team in tackles before he suffered a season-ending injury in UVA's 34-17 road win over Duke (Nov. 15). Additional information from the Butkus Foundation and the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) is below. 2026 Preseason honors. CHICAGO - The Butkus Foundation today announced the preseason watch list for the 42nd annual Butkus Award(R), presented each year to the nation's top collegiate linebacker. The 51-player watch list honors Dick Butkus' iconic No. 51 jersey and recognizes the toughness, instincts, leadership, competitiveness, and football character that defined one of the greatest defensive players in football history. The 2026 watch list features 51 linebackers representing 42 colleges and universities from across the country. Returning All-Americans, All-Conference performers, and emerging defensive standouts from across the Football Bowl Subdivision are among this year's candidates. The Butkus Award remains one of college football's most respected individual honors, recognizing linebackers whose performance reflects the standard established by Dick Butkus more than six decades ago at the University of Illinois and throughout his Hall of Fame NFL career. The Foundation also announced that its Takes Heart(TM) partnership with Carle Illinois College of Medicine will again be featured during the annual Butkus Award television special on the Big Ten Network. The initiative continues Dick Butkus' commitment to cardiovascular disease prevention after a coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan in 2001 helped identify serious heart disease and ultimately extended his life by more than two decades. Today, Takes Heart(TM) promotes early detection, education, and access to life-saving cardiovascular screening while supporting research into the next generation of AI-enhanced preventive medicine. The 2026 watch list includes representatives from seven conferences, led by the SEC (14), Big Ten (12), Big 12 (12) and ACC (9), with additional representatives from the MAC (1) and Mountain West (1), along with two Independents. Virginia's Kam Robinson is the only returning semifinalist. "Every player on this watch list has earned the opportunity to compete for one of football's highest honors," said Matt Butkus of the Butkus Foundation. "My Dad believed great linebackers changed games through preparation, toughness, intelligence, and relentless effort. Those qualities still define this Award today. Through Takes Heart, we're proud that his legacy continues to make a difference beyond football by encouraging people to take charge of their heart health through early detection and prevention." Semifinalists for the 2026 Butkus Award will be announced on October 28th, finalists on November 20th, and the winner will be revealed during the week of December 7th. Selection is based on performance throughout the season, and appearance on the preseason watch list is not required for a player to win the Award. The recipient will be recognized during the Butkus Award celebration in early 2027 and featured in the annual Big Ten Network Butkus Award special. The 51-member Butkus Award Selection Committee is comprised of coaches, professional scouts, former players, and members of the media from across the country. Committee members evaluate candidates using the same qualities that defined Dick Butkus throughout his career: instincts, toughness, leadership, competitiveness, football character, and consistent excellence at the linebacker position. Carle Health to break ground on hospital expansion in Olney. Posted: Aug 5, 2026 / 01:57 PM EDT Updated: Aug 5, 2026 / 01:57 PM EDT OLNEY, Ill. (WTWO/WAWV) - Carle Health is planning to break ground for the construction of a Carle Health Outpatient Service Olney on Thursday afternoon. The expansion of Carle Health Richland Hospital will bring a specialty medical office building and an emergency department to the health campus. According to a news release from Carle Health, the $45 million facility will bring specialty care closer to Olney, reducing wait times and creating a more accessible care experience for the community. During the groundbreaking, Carle Health leaders, along with city and county officials, will gather to celebrate the milestone. Officials will also speak on how this expansion will better serve the area. The groundbreaking will take place at noon on Thursday, August 6, on the southwest side of the Carle Richland Memorial Hospital campus.
Carle Health opens North Star Cafe in Pekin. Posted: Aug 3, 2026 / 10:28 PM CDT Updated: Aug 3, 2026 / 10:28 PM CDT PEKIN, Ill. (WMBD) - The scent of fresh salad, a hot cup of coffee, chocolate chip cookies and hot sandwiches will now be drifting out the doors of Carle Health Pekin Hospital. On Monday, members of the community and Carle Health joined together to cut the ribbon announcing North Star Cafe. The eatery is included in Carle Health's $8 million investment in Pekin Hospital facilities. Tony Howard, Vice President of Support Services at Carle Health, spoke at the event and said it's an investment into Pekin. "What we want to do is build a place that the Pekin community can come and gather," he said. He said the cafe isn't just catered to the hospital's employees but to anyone who needs a quick bite. "One of the nice things about it is that not only can our employees have access to it. Our patients and family members can enjoy this as well," he said. "But we're also hoping the public actually can come and stop in for lunch or stop in the morning and get a coffee." And after careful consideration on designing the menu, it now includes a wide variety of breakfast and lunch options. And by adding a tie to the local community, they've added items based on the Pekin Dragon, such as Dragon Hot Sauce and Dragon Frozen Lemonade. Howard said eating fresh and local is the motive behind the menu. "They're using locally sourced ingredients and wholesome foods, clean ingredients for clean, healthy food," he said. While being able to connect to their patients and anyone who comes in for their morning coffee, he said this will be the place to do it. "We want to do is build a place that the Pekin community can come and gather."
Longtime Carle doctor, Vermilion County collaborative leader, retiring. By Steve Brandy Jul 31, 2026 | 10:54 AM THE FOLLOWING IS A NEWS-GAZETTE STORY BY JENNIFER BAILEY ABOVE: Carle Health's Dr. Tim Meneely, who is retiring at the end of July after 32 years, inspects some leaves in the community garden across the street from Carle at the Riverfront in Danville. DANVILLE - After 43 years in medicine, roughly 32 of them in various positions at Carle Health, Dr. Tim Meneely is calling it a career. The man who started as a Navy doctor says one of the things he's most proud of is the progress made toward improving generational health outcomes in Vermilion County, though it will take decades to fully realize the results. "We are blessed in this profession to get to do something that matters," Meneely said. "And so, I think that's the biggest thing is, and some days don't feel like it, but every day you get to do something that's really going to matter to somebody. "I'm very grateful for a most unanticipated career here; every five to eight years I seemed to have been doing something different, sometimes multiple somethings," he said, about working with the new medical school curriculum, population health, residency and management, and "teaching has always been a lot of fun." He said he plans to keep his affiliation with the Carle Illinois College of Medicine and do something with that.
Carle Foundation Hospital's Skull Base program receives recognition from North American Skull Base Society. The Skull Base & Pituitary Program at Carle Foundation Hospital has been recognized as a Multidisciplinary Team of Distinction by the North American Skull Base Society, according to a July 7 announcement. The program is noted for its tailored care and multidisciplinary approach to treating brain, spine, and skull base tumors. Wael Mostafa, MD, PhD, head of neurosurgery at Carle Foundation Hospital, said, "The NASBS is the major association for skull base surgeons in the United States and in the world, so they have members from all over the globe. To be recognized as a team of distinction...elevates the status of the program and assures patients we are delivering care on par with other major centers." To qualify for this recognition, teams must include specialists across multiple disciplines who are also members of NASBS. The hospital acknowledged numerous physicians contributing to its eligibility and expressed gratitude for leadership and support staff. Dr. Amine said, "We earned this designation by building a dedicated skull base program that consistently brings together neurosurgery, rhinology/otolaryngology, oncology, neuroradiology, radiation oncology, endocrinology, and other subspecialties around each patient's case." Dr. Mostafa added, "This recognition by itself is a testament to the hard work of multiple team members over the years to build the brain tumor and skull base program." Dr. Mansuri said that collaboration among different specialties helps bring optimal treatment: "Patients can require neurosurgery, ENT, endocrinology and radiation oncology. Different teams working together with active discussion helps bring the best treatment for the patient." Dr. Mechas emphasized coordination: "Collaborative care leads to improved outcomes and superior ways to treat patients...frequent communication is key." The hospital has also launched a new clinical neurosurgical oncology fellowship aimed at training physicians through hands-on clinical experience; Dr. Irakliy Abramov began as its first fellow in January. Dr. Amine concluded that national recognition validates their collaborative culture: "It confirms that our patients in central Illinois have access to the same level of multidisciplinary skull base care that is typically associated with large academic centers without needing to travel far from home." Dr. Mechas said he values being part of NASBS for collegiality and multidiscipline opportunities.
