Requirements
  • Successful completion of the Pet Stylist Apprentice program with Petco, or previous experience as a professional groomer and/or completion of a technical grooming training program
  • High-school diploma or GED preferred, though not required
  • Latitude for independent judgement and problem solving, using grooming skills and knowledge to solve problems in routine to moderately complex situations, with some guidance from Grooming Salon Leader, Solutions Manager, or Store General Manager when necessary

Responsibilities
  • Under moderate to limited supervision, perform professional grooming services including bathing, drying, brushing, haircuts and styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and gland cleaning, according to pet parent's instructions and adhering to breed standards and company policies and procedures
  • Operate and maintain various grooming instruments, including clippers, blades, shears, brushes, and dryers
  • Always prioritize the well-being and safety of every animal in the salon, monitor pets for any signs of discomfort, illness, or injury, and promptly report any concerns to pet owners and store management
  • Evaluate individual needs of each pet, taking into consideration coat type, skin conditions, temperament
  • Interact professionally and effectively with pet parents, provide optimal customer service, address grooming related inquiries, offer grooming recommendations, and provide timely resolution to questions or concerns
  • Educate and provide custom recommendations to pet parents on grooming maintenance and at home care practices & products to promote the overall well-being of the pet
  • Maintain a clean and safe grooming area and salon, disinfect, and sanitize grooming tools and equipment, perform daily and weekly cleaning duties in the salon and in adherence to Petco hygiene and sanitation policies, other cleaning and maintenance tasks as assigned, including but not limited to cleaning air filters, vents, and drains
  • Utilize knowledge and understanding of Petco's grooming policies, standards, and guidelines to ensure safety, quality, and consistency in all activities and areas of the grooming business, ensure standards are maintained in grooming salon
  • May need to train, support, and supervise entry-level trainees in the absence of a Grooming Salon Leader

A new class action lawsuit accuses Petco Health and Wellness of falsely advertising its WholeHearted grain-free dog food products as healthy. Plaintiff Mina Maiman filed the class action complaint against Petco on March 16 in New York federal court, alleging violations of state consumer laws. According to the class action lawsuit, Petco sells millions of dollars of grain-free dog food under the WholeHearted brand, which is marketed as providing "complete nutrition" and "maximum benefits." However, the products are not nutritionally balanced and can actually be harmful to dogs, Maiman alleges. The plaintiff says she bought the grain-free products for her dog, Oskar, because she believed they were healthier than other options. However, Oskar developed heart disease and died after consuming the food, she says. Petco misled consumers into paying a premium for the grain-free products, which lack critical nutrients and can cause health problems, the lawsuit alleges. Class action cites studies linking grain-free diets to heart issues in dogs. The class action lawsuit claims that grain-free dog food has become popular in recent years as pet owners seek to feed their dogs more sustainable and healthful diets. However, the elimination of grains can lead to nutritional deficiencies and increase the risk of heart disease, it says. The lawsuit cites multiple studies linking grain-free diets to heart problems in dogs, including one that found dogs switched to a grain-free diet with a high inclusion of peas and lentils showed signs of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) within 30 days. Despite this evidence, Petco continues to market its grain-free products as healthy and does not include any warnings about the potential risks, the class action alleges. Maiman seeks to represent anyone in the United States who bought the grain-free products. She is suing for violations of state consumer laws and seeks certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial. In a separate class action, Petco was recently sued over allegations it failed to properly secure consumers' personal information, leading to a data breach earlier this year. Petco reported fourth-quarter results that beat analyst expectations on profitability despite a revenue decline. Revenue reached $1.52 billion, roughly in line with estimates, whilst adjusted EBITDA of $106.3 million beat forecasts by 12.9%. CEO Joel Anderson emphasised the company's focus on eliminating unprofitable sales and closing underperforming stores, which improved the economic model. Same-store sales fell 1.6% year on year, and the company's store count declined to 1,382 locations from 1,398 a year earlier. For 2026, Petco guided EBITDA to $422.5 million at the midpoint, above analyst estimates of $414.3 million. Management highlighted services as a key differentiator and detailed efforts to target high-value customers whilst widening product assortment to serve varying customer needs.
